What Next?

hey, that thing looks really cool man!

Bit more than I can afford right now, but im sure impressed you found it! If I could find something like that only cheaper (I dont really need so many features, though its pretty flippin cool).

5 hours is actually probably pretty darn close to the amount of usage time on a 10 hour shoot day if you cross out the setup's and stuff. maybe a bit shy, but its not completely off the mark.

Does the Maudio have a stand alone mixer mode? It's basically the Digi 002 but for the M-Audio version of PT. What I have is the MotorMate and its strictly a control surface no audio passes through it.

Funny that your putting the 416 below the PR40, the 416 is about 5 to 6 times the price. There are two schools of thought on ADR. One is that you use the exact same mic as production and try to place it to match a boom operator and your tracks will "match" production. This is sort of true but misses a few things like the environment, which is totally different so the sound doesn't match anyway. However I would say that this is probably the most common practice. The second school and one I picked up from a major ADR supervisor is to use a really good mic and get the best sound you can because you are going to have to make it fit anyway and its easier to do with a nice full recording than one that is already colored in a particular way. He used to use an RE20 that he brought with him. It has the another advantage in that it is almost impossible to blow it out so you can go from whispers to screams. THe PR40 came out somewhat recently and sounds very much like the RE20 with a few improvements (IMHO) and at about 1/2 the price.

BoomRecorder is designed for production recording, has prerecord buffer and very extensive metadata and file naming and time stamping, sound report output etc. And is by all reports very stable. PT has always been a bit crash prone. It's pretty stable now but it will still go in to a lock up from time to time. Instead of a prerecord buffer you have a lag time till recording begins. Almost no metadata is added to the file and it is fairly complicated to set up (relatively speaking). File naming is much more cumbersome than BR and not automated at all. And finally BR will work with almost any audio interface and PT will only work with Digi (or some M-Audio) hardware.
I like PT a lot and use it every day but it would far down my list for field recording.

my collegue who I usually work on music with is buying the new M-Audio control surface, I forget the name, but looks great, and if I need a cart and 8Channels on a shoot i'm borrowing it. you say not much use for productin, but great for post, me and him will be mixing a feature soon, we've done 100% ADR, done all the recording, and have placed in all the exterior sounds, so after we've recorded and placed the interior sounds, we're gonna use that surface to mix with, will be SO much better than using a mouse, probably take a day.

whats boom recorder like? whay can't i just use ProTools?

for interest? why are you using such a high quality mic for ADR, I used a 416. ...and i'm not going to start again if anybody is thinking of saying that. :)

yeh i'll look into those cheap DVD monitors to get me started, before I find an RF one.

My wife got one that has a battery that clips on so you could get more than one. Playing a DVD (one would assume that just a video in would be less of a drain) it gets about 4 hours. But it has a DC in jack so one could make a battery pack. It was around $200 and has a 9" screen.

boom recorder is purpose designed for loc recording. simpler and more task specific than protools, less chance of errors theoretically due to lower pc loads. i believe.

i also use a 416.. well, actually, i use whatever was used on set. easier to get the frequency ranges to match with a mix that matches in the first place.

I also looked into the DVD monitors, but they are much more expensive here in SA, and have crummy battery life. Imagine, if a cam battery can power the dvx/z1/pd150 for so long, how long it would last on only the lcd!!!

COME ON MANUFACTURERS!!!! Jeeez! 7.2v battery slots on an LCD!!!

hey thats also pretty cool... i think 9 inch might actually be a bit big for over shoulder work though. pity, it has all the other features going for it.

i'm starting to really fancy the one i didn't buy, the 3.6" one. Hmm.

not really below, but different. i don't mean quality as in price, the 416 is designed for field use, so I guess a lot is spent there. When I was starting out our dubbing mixer gave me two bits of advice to start me off, he said don't use a studio mic, use, say a 416.. (and cut low freqs to for outdoors dialogue). So I kinda blindly followed this and started using the 416, then decided to stop my blindness and see for myself what the difference was and tried out my rode NT2A, and could not get away from wet lip and tongue noises, cos it was picking up everyhting, nothing like what a 416 would pick up, great for singing though. but yeilded audio that sounded too crisp and too .. i dunno.. too studio.

about the screen, I agree prob 9" is too big. I (atill) really like the look of the one I didn't buy

and for £70 (thats $130 in old money) I think its amazing for what we do.

M-Audio thing - yeah, its like a cross between a Digi002 and an 1814, apparently.. i've not seen it yet.

Not sure which model (AV500 I think), but I witnessed a CA using one of these to pull focus on a DVX...not an easy thing to do.

Cheers
that looks awesome. the links in their site didn't work very well for me so couldn't see how much it was. How much are those things?
