is there anything that you simploy cannot live without, that you don't have right now?

what is your next purchase going to be and why?

For me, I cannot stand the fact I don't have a monitor of my own. i've been looking into this video sender SPX-69TMhttp://www.rf-video.com/products%5Csenders.aspbut don't have the cash just now. I think its the same as one i used from a hire copmpany, and it wasn't great, but my god it was useful. its not like I need a crisp image. then theres the monitor. I used a 7" tft, which i think was a bit big, wouldn't mind something I can slot into the space for my headphones in my kitbag, small and light.

Also, I NEED NEED a wireless monitor set. well not really, but I think I do! :)

I'm with you on this, scooby. Its a great tool on over the shoulder gigs for so many reasons..

Personally, Im not so freaked about the wireless transmission, but more about the actual monitor. What I'd ideally like is something VERY similar to that on the DVX or Z1, only with the battery slot on the back (I dont run a BDS) to accept a normal camcorder battery.

Im usually running an umbilical from the camera, so It probably wouldnt be hard to get an umbilical with an extra line in it for RCA video - and if the director wants a monitor too, then a simple rca splitter at the camera end will fix this.

Other than that, Im in the market for a new mixer bag... and Im looking at the Petrol Eargonizer 1.. Looks nice. And other than THAT, what Im buying next are some of the Rycote/Microcat highwind lav covers.

I'm using ListenTech's IFB system and am loving it. It was much lower cost than Comtek, runs on AA batteries, is frequency-tunable (within a range). It is a bit more consumerish looking than Comtek, but that hasn't been an issue yet. They seem to be well-built, and I purchased the cases for them as added protection. I'm currently using the portable Tx, but am going to get the other Tx for my cart.

I got mine through Trew, but you can get them direct too. Their Web site is: http://www.listentech.com

The other thing I need to add to my kit is a breakaway cable for ENG work. I keep putting it off...and now I need one for tomorrow. Figures, huh?

Wireless monitoring would be another great add for my kit, but again, it is a money thing right now. Not the highest item on my list.

Phil

One item I would like to add to my arsenal is an HD monitor or a converter. Can't remember where, maybe in here, I read of someone using an Xbox360 HD to DVI convertor so you can view the image on a simple computer LCD screen.

I am getting tired of fighting for space in front of the monitor on HD shoots. :nads:

Just completed my switch over to the hybrid Lectros, so that is behind me. I could always use a few more wireless but renting from fellow sound guys when I need a couple extra is just cheaper in the long run. It has led to situations where I have to switch the Tx between multiple subjects in the middle of the day because I am coming up short but if the client wanted more wireless, he needed to shell out more cash.

Cheers

- maybe because he like to see the frame he need to work with - you know we work with the frame not making sketches for radio :-)

i nominate it as n -1 question of the year

well lets start with the obvious - hows he meant to form a booming strategy if he cant evaluate the shot?

i'll let others field the myriad of other reasons..

ah, double posted. i'll second the nomination :)

but fair enough, if you dont know, you dont know. thats why this board is here.

If you don't know the frame you don't know the perspective of the sound, you don't know what should be expected to be heard, you don't know edge of frame, basically you can't see if whats being heard is appropriate for whats being seen.

we sound chaps have to pander to those camera monkeys, can't just record what we want. even when I want to. :)

A wee screen something like the one on the Z1 would be awesome! (how about if it just flipped down from your headphones or something, hehe. )
does anyone konw if they can be aquired as a stand alone LCD display? or fasioned into one? I'll rip one off a PD150 or something.:Drogar-Angry(DBG)::D

that Listen Tech's IFB looks good wabit - I would really like the bodypack variety so can use on the fly OR on cart. even for boom ops remote phones on chaotic shoots would be cool just to cut down on extra wire entanglement. are they reputable? pros and cons compared to the sennheiser stuff? I was looking at some cheap looking in-ear monitors on ebay, Rolls WPM61
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....20001528516&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1

but no way i'm gong to buy something i've never used or heard of. they're cheap though.

Scooby, it was actually me that recommended the ListenTechs and I listed some of the pros and cons in my post. Take a look again.

I don't mind stealing your ideas:

Yeah, cuz it's not like us sound guys haven't taken years of abuse and ridicule from those camera monkeys throughout our careers. :)

Cheers

I'm more than one kind of monkey. I'm a director monkey, a writer monkey, and editor monkey, (yes...it's true) a camera monkey and I hope to be a sound monkey eventually.

On a side note I recorded some really awesome thunder today with my 702 and Oktava! I'm getting that experience stuff you guys keep talking about. Today my experience taught me to keep the gain switch up when dealing with loud unpredictable sound so I can adjust quickly if need be and avoid clipping.

Well, my last purchase was a touch fader control surface for PT, probably not much use in the production world. What I'm looking at next is either a SDU4 or a home prologic decoder so I can check mixes for matrix compatibility. Along more production related lines I bought last year a Heil PR-40 (very much like a RE20) and love it. Not to practical for booming but would work well on that shooting competition that someone was trying to record. Also good for ADR and some FX recording and great for VO work. I may also look at a longer boom pole. Mine is around 6' and that is a we bit close for some of the things I end up recording (moving trains, race cars, etc). If I end up getting a new laptop BOOM RECORDER will be high on the list for those times when I do multi track remote recording (a lot smoother than hauling a DA-78 around). And if I get the time I'm going to have PortaBrace make some mods to the PMD671 case.

As a poss cheap solution to the portable monitor need. On a cheap video shoot I was on they were using a portable DVD player that had external vid in as a monitor. Not the best solution but should be alright for framing and at about $150 for a decent on pretty affordable.

Ah yes, so it was, and oh um yup, so you did.

I do read posts normally, honest! I think I had my girlfriend nagging me over the shoulder last night. :furious3::crybaby::love4:

for anybody reading, I think should clear up that you don't mean 'up' in gain, but 'up' as in, pop it up above the surface, so you can turn it.

I Had to think for a second there Gorilla! :)

Now HERE'S a man who wants a lot of stuff!! like it like it.
my collegue who I usually work on music with is buying the new M-Audio control surface, I forget the name, but looks great, and if I need a cart and 8Channels on a shoot i'm borrowing it. you say not much use for productin, but great for post, me and him will be mixing a feature soon, we've done 100% ADR, done all the recording, and have placed in all the exterior sounds, so after we've recorded and placed the interior sounds, we're gonna use that surface to mix with, will be SO much better than using a mouse, probably take a day.

whats boom recorder like? whay can't i just use ProTools?

for interest? why are you using such a high quality mic for ADR, I used a 416. ...and i'm not going to start again if anybody is thinking of saying that. :)

yeh i'll look into those cheap DVD monitors to get me started, before I find an RF one.

boom recorder is purpose designed for loc recording. simpler and more task specific than protools, less chance of errors theoretically due to lower pc loads. i believe.

i also use a 416.. well, actually, i use whatever was used on set. easier to get the frequency ranges to match with a mix that matches in the first place.

I also looked into the DVD monitors, but they are much more expensive here in SA, and have crummy battery life. Imagine, if a cam battery can power the dvx/z1/pd150 for so long, how long it would last on only the lcd!!!

COME ON MANUFACTURERS!!!! Jeeez! 7.2v battery slots on an LCD!!!

well I bought a small monitor today off ebay. its kinda cheap chinese technology, takes a video in and line in, and can RECORD dvd res with it too! will be fun to record my own takes with sound, to check back afterwards! and it will slot into my kit very easily.
I was looking at this one, and really fancied it;
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....30001938775&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1

until I saw this one, with a camera, and unfortunately a smaller screen,
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4M-Digital-Ca...ryZ31388QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

figured I wouldn't be so much in the doghouse spending money if I could claim it was for using on our holidays too. lasts 5 hours on one charge, but hopefully work out a way to power it off a hirose.
