What mount for Af-100 is "best"?

I'm watching a lens on eBay and this same lens is available in Nikon, Canon, Sony/Minolta Alpha and Pentax mounts. Out of all of those choices, which lens + adapter would be the best for the Af-100 or is all of the functionality between these mount adapters exactly the same?

Manually controlling zoom and focus is course desired and A-OK but my main concern is changing the f stop which I've heard some adpaters don't let you do?

Do you have any other lenses presently in any of those mounts? Or plan to get some? Thats what Id go with.

I picked up a novoflex adapter in Japan and its rather nice.

Nope, I have zero lenses right now (other than native M43 lenses) so whatever mount I go with will dictate what brand of lenses I'll getting more of. I'm not sure if some brands/mounts have more control and functions over others. For example, with the novaflex Nikon F-mount to M4/3 adapter, can I easily control apature? I heard that this is an issue with the Canon EF lenses and mounts.

With that mount there is an aperture control. The only issue I have with these mounts, and its not something they can get over due to the lenses having different speeds, is that you dont know what f stop you are actually on. But yes, you do get aperture control.

Go with Nikon mount lenses, you can get a Nikon mount for pretty much every camera. Also with all Canon lenses except for the old FD mounts you need electronic aperture control, so you'll need to buy a $700 Birger mount to have electronic control, for that price you could get another lens.

Ah OK, at least you can control it even though you'll just have to eyeball to guess what fstop your'e on. Not really that difficult I suppose. Thanks! I'll just go with the Nikon mount since they have the largest collection of lenses anyway. Hopefully there will be better M43 lesnes down the road though.

Well I didnt want to sway you, but Id say the Nikon mount is probably the way to go unless you find a fantastic piece of glass that makes getting another adapter a sound choice.

One more quick question and this is just to clearify. If I buy a Tokina AF (autofocus) lens with a Nikon mount, I wouldn't be able to use the AF anyway because there's no electronic connections to talk to the camera with these adapters right??

I'm really comparing two different Tokina 28-70/2.8 lenses and I'm assumng they are identical except for the AF feature?

AF

Non AF

but one says "AT-X" and the other doesn't so i'm not sure if AF is theonly difference.

This is currently correct, yes. Birger has said that they may be interested in producing a Nikon electronic adapter after their Canon one is done, but that hasn't happened yet obviously. So as of right now, any Nikon lenses are going to be used in strictly manual mode.

I see. Well, do AF lenses usually have focus wheels that just turn and turn? I think with a follow focus I would purposely want manual lenses then so I actully have hard stops from one focusing spectrums to the other? So between the two Tokina lenses linked above, is it better to get the cheaper manual one anyway; given that the lens quality is the same?... which I'm not evens ure about.

I can only tell you "if it were me", but Id go the manual lens as I cant recall the las time I used an AF lens anyway. But that AF lens might be good down the track if you want to invest $1K?? in the Birger mount. But that AF lens does have end to end focus stops.

But that AF lens does have end to end focus stops.

OH, well that changes everything. Yea, might as well go with the Af version since I might get a Birger mount down the road. You never know. Thanks! I appreciate all the help from everyone; and by the way Barry, your book is awesome.

Turns out the Bower Nikon to M43 mount is actually a Kipon (common to ebay) Nikon to M43 mount and I just got it today. Very solid all metal construction. And has nice fit with my zeiss zfs. no tests done yet with camera, because I am still waiting on that (hopefully soon) but will report back then.
