What monitors are people using with their AF100?

Hi all - I haven't been too happy with the latest test footage I got from my AF100 (mainly because I am new and still learning). I need to get an external monitor to better judge the focus and color of my shots. Relying on the LCD isn't enough.

What are some suggestions for an external monitor that people use for their AF100?

Seems like the hot tickets right now are the TVLogic and SmallHD 5.6" models, and the Cineroid EVF. All of them offer pixel-to-pixel focus, among other things.

For color accuracy on your LCD, make sure to update to the newest firmware in your AF100. Original firmware had a slight greenish tint to the LCD which is fixed in the newest firmware.

I'm using the manhattan lcd 5.6inch version and liking that pretty much. It has blue only, 1:1 pixel, false color and a bunch of other stuff. It's not as sexy as the small hd and it doesn't have all of the extras like the tvlogic, but it is a bit cheaper and works for me.

On board I'm using SmallHD DP6's, the creative team gets TVLogic 17", and the clients waaaaaaaaaaay over there get a big ass panasonic viera with questionable colour reproduction - but it's big and that seems to make them smile.

I like the Marshall because of the false color exposure display and it has a bigger screen.

I also like the small hd because it is smaller, has a higher resolution display, and has SDI which is a more solid connection.

What's the difference between the Marshall false colour and the SmallHD false colour?

YES ! sometimes you can't put enough A's in the distance you want the clients to be !

IMO, the Marshall false color is more useable as 55-60IRE is actually pink colored and 60-75 IRE is shades of gray.

Small HD's implementation just doen't make sense. I hope that they change it.

I have found the the SmallHD implementation less that great - but they seem to be constantly playing with firmware so maybe something will change.

Yes, but I find their recommendation of pink to be underexposed. And their focus in red is made redundant by the AF100's.

How big a difference does the higher res of the Small HD make?

It sounds insane, but I've been using a very, very cheap 22" TV bought from my local supermarket. A long HDMI cable makes for a great director's monitor, it is full HD so 1:1 pixel for focus (the director can shout out if it isn't quite spot on) and the thing runs off 12 V so D-tap from a V-lock battery will power it for hours in the field if need be. For the price (less than $150!) it is pure awesomeness. Even the colours aren't too bad.

A broadcast reference monitor it ain't, and camera mounted it ain't, but we've found it hugely useful. Cameraman uses EVF on monochrome with focus in red to focus, LCD with waveform to check exposure, then LCD to frame and capture each shot, and the director sees it all in full-size 1:1 on the monitor so can immediately call for a reshoot of a take if it isn't spot on.

Cheers, Hywel

I have also found a cheap TV that works well as a field monitor, the Vizio Razor 19" has hdmi inputs and can be powered from a 12V source. The color is surprisingly good, though of course it can not be calibrated. The manufacturer claims 1080 resolution. I don't know if it's really showing every pixel, but I can clearly see the difference in clarity between the 14-140 and any Nikon I have. It sells for around $200.

I also have a Manhattan and a dp-6. They both work well, but I like the dp-6 better so I will be selling the Manhattan (ebay starting this weekend).

Using the LH900A which is fabulous, built like a tank and has a waveform... but it was expensive, and I hate the little cable that goes from the control box to the monitor...and its too heavy to mount on the camera...so I also have been noodling getting something lighter/smaller...probably the Marshall as I've used a friends a few times...but all this talk about the smallhd has me intrigued.

I used to have one of these. Bloody fantastic monitor. Using a small HD now. Love its features and size.

Good to know from someone who has experience using the 900...but now I'm getting "option paralysis"...

The TV Logic WFM-056WP uses the same high res. 5.6" LG panel as the smallHD and adds many features, such as; waveform, vector, with blended or opaque background in two sizes, zoom up to 90%, variable aspect ratio markers in any color, embedded audio and TC over HD-SDI displays, HDMI to HD-SDI converted output. List price is $1595.00, DVX User group member discount through Film Tools is $1350.00.
