What Mode? Editing on Avid output to Broadcast Format

Hey guys.... I have a question for you. A company I am freelancing for is editing their stuff on express pro HD whatever. They have some :30 commercial spots coming up. They want them shot and edited in HD, then laid out to tape SD @ 29.97 for the final spot that goes to the stations. So what mode do I shoot in. Do they edit on a 23.97 timeline then export to a 29.97 timeline? What works out the best for those of you who have done this?

720pn
720p
1080i

?

They want the film look/motion.

I know with FCP, I would shoot 720pn edit all on a 720p 23.97 timline then when finished export it adding the pulldown back in to make it 29.97. Is this the same as they would do? Or do I even have it wrong?

Thanks for your time.

Hi kbainter,

I'm trying to piece this together myself. I'm not sure which format is best for which type of work (broadcast with "film look" versus best for indie film versus best for filmout). I do know that there is no one format/framerate that is best for all situations. Which format/framerates are supported by AVID in which kind of timeline is documented, albeit confusingly. See the .doc file available at this link (then start screaming :furious3: )

First I would suggest checking out the AVID and NLE areas of this forum....some people have used Avid to edit DVCproHD quite succesfully. It's just a question of what their intended distibution was. Intended disto format will dictate which format/framerate and therefore which timeline/project format.

Next go over to the avid forums and see what those people have to say.

LOL. his question is simple, but when it comes to broadcast im always so effin confused as well. I dont know how to add pulldown and all that fancy stuff. But you should be able to edit in a 24 frame timeline , then send to the ntsc 29.97 timeline by adding the pulldown no problem, i jsut dont know how :(

i was under the assumption that ...well nevermind, im thinking DVD, i think. LOL. i dont know either.
