What makes this board work?

I manage a message board for my company and we are having some struggles getting the boards to be active. I frequent this board, and several others, and this one seems to have plenty of activity.

What are some key elements that make a message board effective and active?

I have wondered about his for a while.

Go ahead and type in a film related question in the google search. Does DVXuser pop up for any of the links?

I'm sure DVXuser was slow at first, but I'd also like to get some ideas on how to get something like this going!

Sheer awesomeness...

But I hear you. I was an admin for a paintball website back in the day. And we had massive movement, daily posting similar to this site. It started really small but just grew through word of mouth and internet searching. Plus a few members who were writers for the magazine it was apart of. Some pro players and refs. Basically being well known as a cool place to chill. THen one day people starting leaving. And eventually we had a post every month or so.

It's hit or miss.

It helped to have a few industry pros on board from the beginning. When you stumble on a site, and it provides credible information quickly, that says a lot. Throw into the mix the fact that mods don't tolerate any petty bickering and you have a pretty neat site that people come back to.

Clearly, it's the personalities of the people on this site coupled with the massive amount of knowledge those same people possess. You laugh and learn. It's a recipe for success.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that. I keep thinking that. But I keep getting proved wrong.

Believe me, this forum is far and away better than other filmmaking forums I've been on that DO allow flames, as well as discussions of politics and religion. Those forums quickly turned into very nasty and unproductive places to be. Most eventually died a well-deserved death.

I am extremely appreciative of the moderation here, even if it's not perfect.
