what looks the best on vimeo/youtube ?

Remember as well that Vimeo does a better job of encoding video than YouTube, especially if you have a paid account.

Wasn't there some noise recently about how vimeo's going to increase how strict they are with music? Something about your videos getting taken down unless you can absolutely prove you own the rights.

I think the quality difference between Vimeo and YouTube is very small nowadays, Vimeo certainly used to be the better choice, but I feel like YouTube have stepped up their game.
A different discussion is which is the better platform to use, a whole new topic, but I feel YouTube isn't the best platform for independent filmmakers anymore, it's all about the money and the big companies now. Vimeo is great for getting your work seen by a decent audience.
I may be wrong, please say if I am,but I think the basic vimeo account allows you to upload only 720p videos, so 1080p uploads are downscaled to 720p.

Vimeo is checking for unauthorized use of copyrighted music in public videos, but so does YouTube. YouTube will put an annoying ad in front of your video if it automatically detects any copyrighted music.

Fair enough, I thought that there was always a bit of it but Vimeo decided to be waaaaaay more strict about it, to the point where it would cripple a lot of people. As in, can't use it on private videos even (so most of our reels would be gone), and you have to PROVE you own the rights, which is problematic if you're using royalty-free or friends' music.

But I don't really know.

If you are using royalty-free or friends' music, I think vimeo won't flag it as copyrighted and won't take it down. If it is copyrighted, vimeo will take it down, youtube will put an ad and will give the proceeds to the owner of that copyright.

Regarding quality, a couple of years ago vimeo looked clearly better than youtube, today youtube's 1080p looks (to me) very similar to vimeo's 720p. The problem with youtube is that the video still starts at 360p, and sometimes it instists on staying there.

And as always I would prefer 24p over 30p, it's just a different look and it depends on what you want, but this.

I see no difference in video quality between Youtube and Vimeo anymore - in fact Vimeo tends to change the colors of the original more than Youtube does. Youtube is easily more user friendly; stopping, pausing, replaying a video etc. is much easier on Youtube.

My only problem with Vimeo is the speed, sometimes the videos will just not play, i have tried to decode my videos to most of the settings suggested by vimeo, but still my videos have problem playing.

Vimeo isn't doing any sort of copyright checks on private videos at all. They've stated so already. 90%+ of my Vimeo is all private for client approvals, and most of that is copyrighted (by the clients) and I haven't had any problems so far.
I've heard from producers who've had YouTube put ads on their videos that had royalty free stock music in them, or even pull them, so this isn't a new thing in the world of online video.

The main reason I prefer Vimeo over YouTube is that when the video is done playing you don't get a dozen random cat/fail/cleavage/justinbeibercover/douchebag/terroristrecruiting videos, but just three of your own videos. And it doesn't default back to 360p resolution. And it isn't littered with spam and racist trolls posting offensive comments.

Since we're still talking about it for some reason, but everyone seems to just be guessing off their past experiences instead of recognizing that's it's a new system, I looked up vimeo's new copyright policy/software:

http://nofilmschool.com/2014/05/upload-vimeo-copyright-match-audible-magic/

http://www.billboard.com/biz/articl...to-launch-music-copyright-id-system-exclusive

Notable parts:

Doesn't affect private videos for subscription users
Does affect private videos for non-subscription users
Burden of proof is on the uploader
You have the option to appeal before your video gets taken down
It's automatic, meaning any unlicensed music probably WILL be found

And from my own extrapolation--

It's not likely to affect relatively unknown music, so using your friends' music isn't guaranteed to work but is likely fine... which is good, because even in the appeals process there doesn't seem to be any way to prove permission like that.

All of which is almost entirely irrelevant to this conversation, so while I and hopefully others find it useful information, we can go back to discussing uploading compression quality or whatever
