For studio use, what light should work without flicker at those frame rates? LEDs, HMIs, Tungsten, Flos? Those Arri L7-c shurely look yummy, will they work?
the hedler df15 and the dx15 work like a charm, no flicker whatsoever at any speed. Daylight HMIs and pretty cheap.... and made in Germany, Herr Hedler is a person who you can talk to on the telephone.
They all had noticable flicker eh... let's see how many Litepanels will be leaving the shelves after this test, even though the quality of light is nothing to write home about.
So I guess the sun is our buddy here.
But one other thing... I remember Art Adams doing a thread on high speed where he setup a studio shoot and was punching oodles of lights through it. I think his trick was DC generators so the lamps wouldn't dim between cycles.
The DP wrote: "I'm using a halogen box light that RIFA (1kw).Shutter speed is 1/240. I wondered that I also do not flicker.
He said he used a 1/240 shutter speed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that considered a (360 shutter)? Traditional logic says that you should use a 480 shutter speed (180 shutter) for 240fps. Maybe the lower shutter speed eliminated the flicker?
Hm... could it be the motion in the clip that is tricking the eye. We have no fixed spot we can refer to for flicker... on the bubble machine one could sit and stare at the upper right corner and see it pulsing. But here the shadows and gradations are constantly moving...
