What lense

What mm lense does the HVX COME with?

Really?

The HVX comes with a Zoom that is fixed to the camera and can't be removed. In order to get this depth of field you will need to put a lens adapter in front, that will allow you \to use cinema or still camera lenses.

Or better yet; hire someone who knows what they are doing to shoot the job.

Oh, I completely understand you, except for the fact that this guy did this on a small SonyHD cam no better than a HVX and had NO adapter on it. Just the lens to the camera. I were wondering if there were one for the HVX... without the $1,000 adapter. But that's okay, I guess I was eventually going to have to get that anyways...

well one way to get a shallow dof without an adapter is to zoom in all the way, it will create a shallow dof but it won't compare to a 35mm adapter

i don't see the 35mm dof your talking about, the image is either in focus or out of focus, then totally in focus at the middle of the video.

Oooooo, how do you know??

You're looking at 4 options.

1/3" or 1/2" sensor camera with a DOF adapter (which I doubt), a 2/3" sensor (which I doubt as well), a Red One, or a DSLR. Judging from the movement of the camera, I'm assuming a DSLR. I just get the feeling of a light camera being used, the way it's moved around and what not.

You can't tell the diff between a RED ONE, or a DSLR???

Well they have the same or similar sized sensors. Thus giving the same DOF... And to watch anything on Vimeo it'll be in HD or SD, thus if it is RED footage, it'll be scaled down. Play Red versus DSLR on a 4k display and the RED will clearly look better.

Of course it will be scaled down. That's amazing though, So I guess that makes DSLR cameras better than HVXs? Because I have a P2 Card and those examples look better than ANYTHING I've shot

its not THAT simple. there is give and take with this conversation.

All I care about is look and quality.
And the guy that shot these DSLR videos is perceived as better than me because of the quality. Here's my latest (Good luck making it to the end):

So what can I do to my HVX to make it look like the DSLR or better? Any tips or suggestions? I'm COMPLETELY award of 35mm lenses, I don't have that kind of money yet. Thanx in advance

to be brutally honest with you. the biggest differences between your video and the video you want to look like are planning and knowing how to use your camera.

your video wasnt bad. in fact i liked the way you implemented the comic book style stuff. but you cant compare it to the video you originally showed us. that would be like trying to compare a kevin smith movie to a cohen brothers project. one isnt "better" than the other but they are worlds apart in style. if you take some time to learn and experiment with light and using ND filters as well as how to color correct. you will be able to do that kind of work with your HVX.

the biggest advantage the DSLR guy is going to have is better low light performance and built in DOF ability. but that video had more in and out of focus effect than overall depth of field of each frame.

one thing you could do is to get rid of all that hacky primary color film leader and countdown crap at the front. nothing screams HOBBYIST! faster than that stuff.

yeah...it's next to impossible to compare the style formats of those videos. The original looks much more filmlike but that style can be easily achieved on the HVX. My guess is there are several setup and scene file differences with the two shoots.
