Hi, I'm now picking my primary lens for my Newly bought FS100.. any recommendation? Carl Zeiss 35mm F1.4 ZE is now under my consideration.. if i have to choose between 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm lens.. my budget would only allow me to pick 2.. which would you all recommend? hehe.. thanks for helping ya! ^^

For the cost of just the ZE 35/1.4 you could go with the Samyang 35/1.4 and 85/1.4, a Zeiss C/Y 50/1.4 + cheap adapter and and a nice legacy zoom or two (there are tons of FD, OM and Rokkor zooms available for peanuts) - if you want to go the manual lens route like the ZE.

Not sure why you would get the ZE (Canon mount), because it has electronic aperture and you will need the Metabones adapter to make it work. If buying Zeiss, you should get the ZF (Nikon Mount). It has an aperture ring so you can use it on any camera and don't need an electronic adapter like Metabones. Makes much more sense and is future proof.

I've read some reviews that has not been favorable to the 35mm f1.4. Says the chromatic aberrations are really high in that lens. Might want to get the ZF 35mm f2 and it's a lot cheaper as well.

Zeiss ZE only if you use metabones . ZE has no manual aperatures . ZF is what you are looking for . But there is one very important `pain with ZF mount lens` - focus ring goes with other way which confuse me so much ,and I choose contax zeiss over modern line of zeiss . So far I have only one contax zeiss and one zeiss ZF I was going to get them more ,but I start to doubt when I saw some test which show how good samyang make lens . The weakest samyang 85 1.4 goes head with head with contax zeiss 85 1.4 and it is photo test where is more resolutions . In video probably there is no any difference . Full hd is only 2 megapixel .
maxemanuel make short test with sony 50 1.8 oss & 50 ZEISS Compact Prime CP.2 1.5/50 Super Speed lens

I do not know what to think .

For the price of the one you can get all 3 of the E-mount primes, plus change... Zeiss-Sony 24mm, Sony 35mm, and Sony 50mm. All f/1.8, lightweight, and great optically. *And* in the latter two cases, optically stabilized. And E-mount 85mm is coming out shortly.

My Zeiss 24-70 F2.8 with an LAE2 adapter is my goto lens and is on the camera most of the time. I am however interested in the E mount trio mentioned above and the recent 18-200 Sony servo zoom for outdoor run and gun situations but there has been nothing about when it comes out on its own or how much. But all of these choices really depend on what type of shooting you are doing. I don't think you can ever have too many lenses.

I can see a quality 24-70mm fast zoom in my future but I got a VG-10 when they first came out, so I invested a bit in the E-Mount glass with the 16mm pancake, 50mm 1.8 to go with the 18-200. I also had a couple of older minolta lenses from years ago to play with and have rented a few lenses since getting my FS100 this past summer.

The reality for me is I already cover the range of "View" I need for the work that pays the bills. I'm not doing Indie film type work, so I don't really think my customers would notice the difference. If I dropped the OIS however, I think I would be in trouble no matter how much technical improvement there was in the picture.

Personally, I have times where it is very difficult to be honest with myself on which lens to get next or even if a lens is what I really need next. For me, if the E-mount does the job its what I'm going with first.

hummm... 35/1.4($1,850) + 50/1.4($725) + Metabones EF to NEX ($400) = $2,975 for glass?

I might buy;
Metabones F to NEX ($100)
Roiknon cine 14/3.1 -24/1.5 - 35/1.5 - 85/1.5 Fmount ($2,100)
Nikkor 50/1.2 - 135/2.8 - 200/4.0 ($750)

Notes
- The color rendition of the Nikkors and the Rokinon's are not a match, but easly corrected in post

- I think i would create better work with a box full of 14/24/35/50/85/135/200 than a box with a 35 and a 50 only....

- That said my lens package is a bit more than your budget, i do have the 35/50/85/135/200 listed above, but use a Zeiss A mount 16-35/2.8 and an Angenieux 28-70/2.8 as my workhorses, i find i move faster with zooms on

- I shoot indie films and don't have a use for IS or autofocus.

Can you tell me more about this lens . I have la-ea2 and 17-50 f2.8 but 50 at the end is to short for me in many situation ,so I need something like 24-70 . I heard zoom ring is very stiff ,is it true ?
There is not too many video on youtube with this lens ,but all shows very sharp image .

You might also look at the 28-105 F2.8. I know, it's a Tamron, but I've found it to be quite a nice "all around"
lens with a constant 2.8. I've got a bunch of third party lenses (Sigma and Tamron) and honestly for video
they seem plenty sharp to me. They might not be Canon L glass, but you don't have to worry about resolving
24 megapixel still photographs either........

jackson5759, could you say more about what your needs are? If you were shooting primarily fiction, then a set of primes might make sense. If you are shooting documentaries or run and gun, then one or more zooms might make sense. Also, did you buy the stock 18-200 lens, and if not, why not? (to get an understanding of your thinking). Are you thinking primarily about one kind of shooting?

Well I would suggest you need at least 18, so I use an 18 prime and a 35-70 zoom

+1.. as noted above my main choices are a Zeiss 16-35 or an Angenieux 28-70, the Zeiss 24-70 is not internal focus/zoom making it impossiable to work behind a matte box, deal killer for my use.

28 is not wide enough and 35 is not long enough for a one size fits all zoom.

the 16-80 Sony-Zeiss is a bit slow @ 4.5, and is not internal focus/zoom, but it sure covers a ton of everyday useful ranges - might be a good choice at $1,000 + LEA2? leaves $1,600 on the table, then maybe go hunting for a set of CY Zeiss fast primes and the 80-200 t4 Zeiss zoom

16-80 is perfect.. but is the lens any good, focus feel, extension as noted etc.

Ive had tokina 17-50, a nikkor 18-80, and the 18-200 kit lens, also the 18-50 that came with my NEX5n

Basically they are all terrible, compared to the joy of using my 18 and 35-70 (yes i might if I had spare cash consider some of the 28-70 lenses)

I still own all of those 'full zooms' and them all and on occasion use them

Super rushed? 18-200 kit lens
Medium rushed? 18-80 nikkor
Normal hurry? 18 and 35-70 (I bough 2 VNDs to speed up changes)
Drama? - primes and solid filters
