Just wondering because of course when you go from DVX100B (SD) to HPX170 (HD) you of course have to start to upgrade everything else you have!! (gott dammit technology) so I am now in research & buy mode for a new HD monitor capable of giving me 'close enough' quality for Color grading and editing (because my 22' lcd right now isnt cutting it ) . and by the way, by 'close enough' , I mean , close enough that it looks good on my 50 " plasma but not 3-10K for a monitor because I'm not micheal bay and I dont need EXACT davinci coloring because, well, I'm not releasing transformers 3 any time soon..

so what monitors are you guys using to edit in post that is doing a good enough job for you that you would recommend for HD footage?

I know alot of people say CRT for accurate color but whats wrong with something like this..

its an HD monitor/PC & Tv and since we are going to be viewing the stuff we film on HDTV's why not color grade and effect on one? Make sense..no?
thanks for the help

It's not perfect but I use a fairly modest TFT that at least calibrates to recognised standards. I then use a decent calibrated CRT JVC to check the output, but that's getting more pointless because most folk have moved to flat panels now.

I would say the calibration of the monitor is as important.

ive used a range of smaller monitors from $500 to $2000 and the 8" "smallHD" is really really nice!

true 720p res. SOLID as hell build, decent weight, blue-only feature. mounting holes on all sides. only complaint is the battery mount is a bit hard to get used to and it doesnt have SDI in. but for $800, i can manage : )

i do the same kind of thing. i have a calibrated sony ntsc crt reference monitor that i give everything a final look on.

yeah that smallhd looks nice BUT I was asking about post production monitors to edit/effect/color grade on.. low cost- decent enough results-

and was wondering particularly about using HDTV TV/PC monitors considering its what we as ,people who buy/watch the videos/films/etc , on, view them on. . so whats wrong with editing on something like that?

keep the options/comments coming.. and if anyone can recommend any, low to mid cost, please do.

so was i. if you want low cost with any degree of accuracy and not a ton of hassle - the smallHD is probably your best bet

all consumer tvs will "flavor" the output to one degree or another. i wouldnt suggest that route AT ALL. some folks do it and "claim" to be happy with the results. but ive tried about a half dozen different ones and none have satisfied me...

about the best non-broadcast option ive seen is the combo of the matrox mxo and an apple 23"cinema display. shane ross did some extensive work with that combo and he said it was kosher - and if its good enough for him, it would be fine for just about anyone. youre looking at about just under $1800 or so for that route.

but isnt the smallhd an 8" footprint..? so you are able to edit/effect/color grade with an 8" monitor? I'm still working with 20/20 vision but damn! lol

when you say none have satisfied you.. is it because maybe, how do I say this without offending.. your anal? Like are you one of those people that can point out slight imperfections/inconsistencies in movies but that 95% of people just watching can't or dont?

see thats what I'm saying.. I'm wondering (and yes, money does play a part in it, but unless were rich , it always does) if you/me/we as our DOP's and colorists and what not, tend to put too much into "you gotta get a 3-10 thousand dollar monitor to get the exact color grade of a movie OR can we just use something that is HDTV PC monitor and do a good enough job ..?

No.. Yes..

its not optimal, no. but you said affordable. so somethings gotta give, right?
id give a little size for more accurate color ANY day - ESPECIALLY if its a trade off between a reasonably "flat" product as opposed to something thats designed to be full of enhancements to sell 20,000 units to joe pipewrench down at costco.

and no. im not really "that" guy. i have a pretty high tolerance for "close enough for government work" i just know what i expect as a general good enough, and on a consumer HDTV for monitoring - ive not found it.

but thats just me.
