What is your favorite keying software/plugin for premiere or after effects cs5? I'm not worried about the price. I want something that can really get the job done. Thanks for the help.

I'm not looking for fine, I'm looking for the best I can buy. If it means spending a few hundred more and taking the time to learn a program or plugin that will save me hundreds or thousands of hours in the long run, that is what I want to get.

Well when I say fine, that means it's good enough for broadcast tv and motion pictures. Keylight is a very good plugin and is pretty straightforward. I've never really found the need to use anything else, especially if I would have to pay for it.

Primatte is a good one as well.

Though if you're planning on doing a lot of keying/compositing, then you might want to look into a program like Nuke instead of AE/Premiere.

What type of footage will you be working with?

When it really comes down to it, 90% of the work needed for a quality key is done on set when lighting and shooting.

+1 for primatte. More tweaking tools available. been using it for years. MUCH better than keylight.

I use it for Corporate and Broadcast commercials.

Every time I use keylight, I get weird noise (not from spill) in the blacks, and I just say screw fiddeling with it, and use the normal color key just fine.

Keep in mind that one man's "really nice key" is another man's crap. I've seen dozens of clips that were "amazing keys" with "xyz brand camera" that looked like someone's first try with Photoshop in 1996.

So much of succeeding with Keylight (the only keyer I've used to date) is having nice & even greenscreen lighting, followed by really analyzing the effect (esp. with anything like DSLR or DV video). Shooting daylight vs. tungsten seems to be a huge help as well.

Holdout areas, choked inner masks, the occasional roto mask - they can all come into play to get a useable key. My guess is that attention to detail, expertise with the feature set and willingness to experiment make a bigger difference that the software used.

Perhaps Primatte can eliminate those steps (I imagine there's a trial version) - I have too much stuff on my shopping list to replace Keylight, and the current footage I'm getting from DSLRs isn't going to key to my standards with anything. I've found it takes a lot of work to get something that looks natural, even at SD or 720p.

I know, there's lots of examples on Vimeo and YouTube - and most have thick cut lines, blobby hair, crawling edges, etc. And few of those shots show the slightest effort to match lighting, grain, softness. motion blur, DOF, color, etc. to the background plate.

Premiere's ultra key is probably the best keyers i've seen built into a NLE. Right up there with Avid's. But yes in AE , keylight is also amazing. Foundry makes really good software, it's a steal just to have that bundled in.
