FS7: What is your best lens with your FS7

Agreed. But I did those tests a year and a half ago.

But as I said in an earlier post, I've become disillusioned with center scan HFR. I'm going to try to find the time this weekend to do some controlled testing of:

4K @ 24fps
4K @ 60 fps
2K Full @ 24 fps
2K Full @ 60 fps
2K Center @ 24 fps
2K Center @ 60 fps
2K Center @ 72 fps
2K Center @ 240 fps

If I do them all in both XAVC and RAW. That's a lot of shots.

I think it will be dirty - esp compared to shooting 4k to make HD,

it could have an application with an S16 zoom but probably Id use my Ex1 for jobs that needed that sort of flexibility

Re: The Sony 18-105...

In some very quick testing, noticing definite distortion with correction off. Much better with correction on, however that loses MLUT in CineEI mode. Difficult to focus. I think if I were to buy one, it would be for run-and-gun in HD shooting one of the hypergammas.

Image is decent enough. In short, I think it worth the $600 price if you understand its strengths and limitations.

FWIW, I'm finding I get focus most of the time with peaking on. And I'm running it with no MLUT, due to the bug you mention, Ned - just SLog3 in the EVF.

But it's not a lens I love - it's a bit like the Canon 24-105, in my opinion. A bit of a donkey, but the 18-105 is used for all of my handheld work at the mo.

BTW, I inadvertently turned off IS for a couple of mins during an actuality shoot last week, noticed it was off, switched back on and re-captured the material with IS on.

The difference was tangible - I didn't use any of the non-IS shots in the cut, due to micro vibration. With IS on, it still has a nice handheld feel - but without the choppy staccato movements.

Ben.

I don't get it - no 4k , no HFR, no MLUT , hell to focus... Just get the Canon if you need 24-105 .

Yep - except the zoom barrels in and out, meaning I can't use it with a matte box and flag - and I've been caught out a couple of times recently when trying to use a grad filter without matte box shading - internal reflections off the back of the filter.

I have shot a 4K interview with the 18-105, and it wasn't too bad.

But there's no getting around it - there's a serious lack of a sensibly priced decent zoom lens solution within this crucial focal range for a crop/S35 sensor.

And before someone says it, the 17-55 just doesn't have enough reach for me.

Ben.

The problem is that the 28-135 was originally designed for the full-frame A7s. 28mm is fine with the A7s, it but doesn't work well with the FS7 for run & gun. I could live with the 28-135 if it was 18mm instead.

I would pay 5k for an 18-105 f4 with the 28-135 mechanics

I think this^is coming. Sony has already announced they are
working on a line of cinema lenses. They have shown in the past (with the
Sony F3 PL prime lens set) that they can make good lenses at a good price.
And the 28-135 is great in a lot of ways.....as is the 18-105. Now they just
need to combine the good points from both those lenses.....

Don't you feel that this lens is an indication that Sony will release a full frame camera (with a7s sensor?) in FS7 body? Next year or 2017.

Only Sony knows what is up their sleeve, but I don't think a FF is coming soon. The A7s and 28-135 are actually from Sony's consumer division, and the professional division at Sony saw the 28-135 and said, "hey, let's bundle that lens with our new FS7." So the lens was matched with the camera after they had both been developed independently in two different divisions. Knowing Sony, the two teams might not have even known the other product was in development until much later. One product did not lead to the other, so it does not imply that a FF pro camera is coming. One might be coming anyway, but the lens does not mean it. Disclaimer: This post is 50% things I've been told by insiders and 50% speculation.

I think Doug is right, Sony has a lot of divisions that don't necessarily talk to each other , nor to the actual consumer base that will be using their gear.

I recall some number of months ago, probably back in the late fall, where Juan Martinez who was involved in some of the decision making around the FS7 said something to the effect (and I am paraphrasing) 'Sony is aware of the problem with the focal length of their zooms with S35 cameras. Stay tuned.' He wasn't referring to the release of the 28-135 but something different.
