what is with macs that make them so special?

Re: what is with macs that make them so special?

Since *everyone* wants the last word on the topic, the thread will die slowly... ;)

One...last...word...

Go with the Commodore; the 128 if you can afford it. The 64 will do you fiine if that's all you can get. I'd rather have the 64 with the tape drive and kickin dot matrix printer than the 128 without

Proof, once again, that Jim hates people. ;)

anyone that hates people is a friend of mine.

unless he hates me, because I'm not into that kind of co-dependancy.

Re: what is with macs that make them so special?

This is such an umwinnable topic that will never die. I think at least the XL2 vs. DVX is however.

Macs are awesome, and properly built PC's are awesome. My take is this, Macs are more expensive in general but built very well (proprietary hardware and all). PC's are much more modular and frankenstienish, which is both good and bad. If you know what components are good, and serve your uses, you can build a PC that kicks ass. Unfortunately, there are a lot of compromises in pre-built ones by a bazillion companies that add to the whole "PC's are crap" argument.

I bought hardware for video editing. Minus the CPU, it ends up being the same as what's in a G5 for the most part. I spent a hell of a lot less though.

As far as OS, I think Windows XP CAN be stripped and streamlined to work well, but why the hell should I have to. Linux doesn't offer enough audio and video apps that I know of. If I wasn't such a fan of frankenstiening, and had the cash, I of course would get a decked out G5, but would also have a PC.

By the way, I actually have the smelliest armpits. :P

Re: what is with macs that make them so special?

It's odd to me.  My son has Down's and I still think it's a funny picture.  I feel guilty for thinking it's funny because it is a bit insensitive, (as is most humor), but I can't help myself.  I love my son, and I am bothered at times by the way people with disabilities are treated in society.  He is a great kid with more potential than most people would give him credit for.

But humor has no logic.  If you laugh, it's funny to you.

Re: what is with macs that make them so special?

The picture is funny. No doubt it’s the face of an angel to the kid’s parents.

But the words are mean.

Re: what is with macs that make them so special?

I almost got a job at the Special Olympics working in the media production staff. (no there's no joke coming next) I was crushed when they went with someone else.

What this has to do with Apple is beyond me though.

I think Rich was attempting to place a comedic capstone on this thread. Instead, he opened a can of worms.

Re: what is with macs that make them so special?

squishy sticky worms ;D

Actually the words aren't mean.  It's the way you are interpreting them.  My son is retarded.  He is delayed.  His emotional and intellectual capabilities will plateau early.  All of these things are simply a fact.  Honestly, I'd rather he be retarded than mean or narrow minded.  The word has just taken on a decidedly un-PC connotation.  To retard is to slow. (sometimes I'm retarded myself.)  Now they call it "challenged", or "special needs" or "differently abled"  or just "special" (which I hate.)  If people worried less about what to call it, and more about how to deal with it, we'd all be better off.

And again, I can't reiterate this enough.  I am not offended.  I think it's funny.  Perhaps that's because I know that the intent was not mean spirited.  I'm telling you, you guys would be shocked at some ot the things my wife and I say.

Re: what is with macs that make them so special?

Um, okay. . .back to the thread--I own a G4 and a Powerbook at home, and use PCs for my dayjob. Mac arent really that much more expensive than PC's these days, and given they only own 15% of the computing market, their prices are fair. And since PCs rule the land, shouldnt PC's acually be way cheaper?
For myself, I cant stand that the world's dominating operating system-XP-is so crappy and 20 steps behind OS X. So many innovative features in OS X(iLife, iTunes, expose, dock, etc--soon to copied in Window Longhorn in 2006) leave XP in the dust. Whats with the security issues? Shouldnt IE have anti pop-up built in? Whats with the viruses and spyware? Do you know how many PCs at my work (AAA) have to be erased on a monthly basis because of spyware?
Why do PC programs crash so hard? Mac programs crash, but not to the point of erasing and reinstalling the whole program. Bill Gates owns probably half the planet, but cant make a stabile, innovative operating system.
