What is up with the Acad. Award broadcast?

The sound was the culprit!
Sometimes too much ambient, sometimes no nat at all while seeing people applauding, presenters mics left on as the show went to breaks, weird sound from the stage like auto level or something. Pounding applause on the mics of Martin and Baldwin.
Strange sound.

Amazing that one of the most viewed shows in the world hires incompetent sound mixers. You'd think it would warrant hiring someone really, really great. It's not like there is a lack of top flight sound mixers in Hollywood.

It wasnt just the sound, whoever was directing the live edit was horrible. Late cues and missed camera moments. It was obscenely bad.

His crews hate him. He is a douchebag. For as brilliant as he is he is a complete shi* of a human being.

Get a clue.

Perhaps the way to get a clue as to how his crews regard him...

...is to work on one of his crews. I'm sharing an office with a bunch of fellow Avatar alumns and when I read stuff like this out loud to them, everyone just smiles and shakes their heads.

Don't confuse someone who - like any manager - can be demanding, difficult and/or unpleasant on occasion (and sometimes with reason) with someone whose 'crews hate him,' who's a 'douchebag,' etc, etc etc.

Try reserving the personal vitriol for people who have actually done something to you, personally.

Why single out Cameron? Hollywood is full to the brim with insecure, narcissitic, psychopaths. About 70% of the people who work in it. Then about 30% are really super nice salt of the earth people who are the greatest.

It's kind of part of the territory and to be honest, even when you are around or working with really, truly nice A-list people, whether producers, directors or actors, 80% of the time, their assistant, manager, agent or the other people surrounding them are really hard to get along with. It's part of the game.

Cameron has a rep as difficult. So what, so do many people we all have to deal with. When you make your studio as much money as Cameron has or does, he gets a pass from the entire town.

Harvey Weinstein - legendary for his abuse of power. I think more people hate Harvey than hate Cameron.

The list goes on. Then there are the Tom Cruises. While I think he is pretty wacky, people consistently say that he is one of the nicest people in the business, like really, truly engaging and nice. You don't get hundreds or thousands of people saying you are nice by only being nice some of the time.

Harvey and Bob are the least liked in that town (I like them, always been nice to me) but yea, champain corks were popping all over town in celebration of their fall and now a hedge fund wants to give them $800M to buy Miramax back, geez, make sure you aren't invested in that fund because few will do business with them again.

Tom is a very nice guy, he used to own a hvx200 to film his kids soccer games btw and has come here a couple times back in the day to learn about it.

Cameron's poo pooed over too many studio heads but I'm sure he is forgiven after Avatars BO numbers, at least by 10% of them but not hs peers, NBD, he has a home where he is at and should stay there.

And Cameron is a very talented filmmaker, so it makes it easier to stomach. I know plenty of people with poor personalities who are difficult, but they don't make up for it with talent, so they are worse than useless.

Studios change studio heads like underwear so pissing one off probably isn't the end of your career anyway.

You'd think but when a studio invests millions trying to get projects off the ground then you back out it it's not good. Doesn't matter if they change heads, the losses are still on the books and so is his rep. The best predictor of the future is the past. Oh well, doesn't matter, he has a home where he is at and I hear the Avatar sequil script is done.

One thing that impressed me re: Avatar is the degree to which the theatrical cut matched the shooting script. There were a few differences, but they were comparatively minor - not nearly so much drift as you usually see in a major feature.
