*Dumb question alert*

The cans spraying fire in the still below. I don't know what they are called and all the word combinations I tried on google brought up fire extinguishers. So what are they called and anyone here used them on set? I have a music video shoot this weekend and I would love to incorporate them. Anything I should know besides the fact that they may be fire hazards? While at it I would also like to incorporate the little lights lining the stair rail. Any insights into these?

As for the lights they are most likely g40 string lights with frosted bulbs. As for the fire effect any flammable aerosol can be used as a flame thrower, and not safe or recommended.

Yeah, even hairspray or a fart will do the trick, but don't try this at home.

You can always try it at somebody elses home

Somewhere on youtube is a video of guys filling super soaker (pump-up) water guns with WD-40, attaching a burning birthday candle to the end and using them as flamethrowers. Kind of impressive in a "so this is how hillbillies die" kind of way...

Hire an effects person.

DOUBLE + 1.

Yeah, I had a bit of a rough and tumble youth and was at some parties where we played with the aerosol can flame throwers. They are very dangerous. The big problem is that the plastic aerosol top tends to catch on fire from the heat. I saw a can of hair spray catch on fire in a buddy's hand and when he threw it it ignited into a big fire ball. Thankfully we were outside and only burned up a small patch of grass. There is no way I would try that on film shoot with aerosol cans. There are pro flame throwers made for stage shows. Call a local musical supply/lighting/staging provider and ask them about that.
