I shot some footage over the weekend and while monitoring on a crt, i noticed that in one shot, i have this rectangle in the center that at first i thought was crt burn-in on my monitor.. but then i over-boosted levels on the clip and this is what i see - where is this coming from?

p.s. - sorry for the incorrect aspect ratio .. the rectangle in question starts just around his chin and goes down to his chest .. and from his right elbo to a bit past his left side

What were your settings? It looks like you were shooting in near darkness with with open iris and tons of gain? I've never seen a rectangle like that, but if you were pushing the camera to its limits, these are kind of weird things you might expect.

Could this have something to do with the anti-glare plate in front of the lens? Like you're getting a reflection of it off of your UV filter?

it's not tons of gain, i purposely boosted levels in post so you could see this square .. yes i shot in a very dark setting and i do have a UV filter - there was a light that was aimed in the general direction of the camera but not pointed at it and i think HorseFilms may be right about this .. i guesss there is where a matte box would help :) .. or to flag off the light a bit- either way, this doesnt compromise the shot in this case, but just wanted to know what it could be... this was also not visible at all on location.

A reflection, very interesting. Yeh, a hood would be nice. You can also flag off the lights so they don't spill light in the direction of the camera. What kind of UV filter do you have? Perhaps a better filter with better coatings would be less prone to reflections?

i have a hoya hmc.. in this case it was also very dark .. 1 50 watt halogen spotlight (the type used in recessed lights) was pointed at a reflectro below and to the left of the camera ..the other was a lowel omni (300watt bulb) with a full scrim and barndoors close almost completely to only have a vertical slit that was about 3 feet above camera pointing forward towards talent.
i guess next time i'll check for spill
