C70: What is this on the sensor?

Shopping for a used c70 I came across a unit at a camera shop for a great price. It was listed as being in excellent condition but with this notation: "Slight smudge/artifact on sensor. Does not seem to affect image quality." The shop sent me an image of the smudge which I have attached here. They also said they cleaned
the sensor. Thoughts?

They are almost always cleaning marks from friction or came from the factory that way (rare).

Almost impossible for it to be anything else unless you drop something on the IR glass or are messing around with some type of adapter and lenses that stick into the chamber.

Handheld swabs with liquid drying can easily create marks or dissolve some coating (if present).

Just for comparison, Lensrentals is selling off a bunch of rental gear. And there's currently a 20% discount with the code 1DERFUL25 (which is shown in a banner on their site). I've rented and bought from them and their stuff tends to be as described (ie- they have a 1-4 rating system, list approx hours, etc.)

They have a couple C70s for about $2250. Each includes a couple batteries, charger, etc.

Can confirm as well, regarding Lensrentals.

I've bought many, many lenses, accessories, used camera bodies, etc. from them over a few years now and it's all been as described/good condition. Unless it's described as "for parts" of course.

Let me put it this way, last year I rented a C70 from them for a two-camera shoot (my local rental house's C70s were out on jobs). It was well packed, fully functional and matched with the C70 I own. (I've also rented other stuff from them)

Yesterday, I bought a use C70 from Lensrentals. It'll be here in a few days... I'm not worried. :)

Sounds good, Jim. Let me know how the condition is when you receive it. BTW did you buy the 300-500 hr I had my eye on ;)?

I've been a Lensrentals customer for about 10 years, since the beginning (support still responds to emails with GIFs after their answer/text after all these years, and I only know this after chatting last week about an early return/partial refund which they're always generous with if you cut your rental short).

One of my favorite businesses, rent and buy with confidence.

Sign up for their newsletter for extra promo codes and like the one above they'll email you periodically.

Probably. Sorry, man...

Ya, I was a BorrowLenses customer for several years, since they were more local to me. They were good, and eventually sold to Lensrentals (and I think Lensrentals bought a couple other online rental houses; probably a tough business). The transition has been pretty OK (though again, I usually rent from Chater Camera near my house).

And the stuff I've rented has been in better-than-expected shape.

I also used to rent all of the time from Borrowlenses. They were my preferred online rental place when I used to travel all of the time for jobs and it was cheaper to rent gear from them and have it shipped ahead to my destination.

When Borrowlenses was bought by Lensrentals they had kind of an amazing "going-out-of-business" sale where they sold off a ton of inventory that I guess was already covered by what Lensrentals owned?

I ended up buying my C500 II during that sale for an amazing price at the time, along with a few other items.

Since then I've been buying used gear from Lensrentals when they have sales and renting occasionally as well.

It's an interesting, and by interesting I mean incredibly difficult, time for camera rental houses. It seems like every time I turn around there's another one going out of business.

I've also purchased gear from soldtiger online auctions in the last year from some of their big selloffs for rental companies (Halwick Production Rentals, Red Letter Rentals, Keslow Camera).

I've gotten some really great deals, but it does illustrate how difficult it is right now for many out there.

No worries ;)... It was just an impulse buy that I shouldn't do anyway. I'm in the Sony Eco-system but just dreaming of greener pastures i.e. better image quality

Why didn't you make the Komodo work if you were after image quality, too PITAssy? (it was probably your best IQ camera from what I know)

Yeah, too much rigging/quirks. Image quality was a 10 though. I was thinking of picking up a Nikon ZR but there's some usability issues - although I can use my Sony glass. The c70 really isn't a good fit for me in terms of ergos but I absolutely loved the image when I had one...

Maybe one day I'll post the email a B&H manager once sent me how I can't return stuff anymore (back in 2016/2017).

They lifted it since then and I've returned some stuff, but on a scale of 1-10 I'm a 1 now compared to the 10 I was before with buying and returning.

But it's important to note I didn't buy stuff to use it for jobs and then return it; I just didn't like half the stuff/didn't think it was worth its price, and returned it usually within 48 hours (not everything but a lot).

And obviously sold a lot, too.

Yeah, I remember. You've definitely worked on your GAS. I'm the same; I don't buy stuff to use it on shoots (free rentals) I test the stuff out and either it works for me or it doesn't. On paper it's hard to judge what's going to work...

I still make some silly purchases but just not cameras. But the irony of it all...my most used items in my life for the last 20+ years have been Apple laptops by far and I only upgrade them every 5 years or so. There is nothing else I've ever had that has been used so much.

What about Komodo X?
