They shoot to different formats/codecs.

As for what's better? It's a matter of opinion. Though, the P2 workflow has been around longer, and is therefore more trusted. (It's just a lot more expensive).

The question of which is 'better' needs a little more context. Better in what way?

The P2 cams are better if you want the extra features they provide (like a few more FPS options and timelapse functions) and don't mind paying an arm and a leg for the media. The codec used on the P2 is useable immediately on more editing systems whereas most (good) editing systems will transcode the AVCHD footage to something more suitable for editing. There are some exceptions, such as Edius.

But 'better' is somewhat ambiguous. SDHC is far better in terms of $ per GB and produces perfectly adequate footage for most purposes.

If all you are interested in is 'better' in a purely technical sense then there are other 'better' cameras and systems available as long as you are willing to pay significancy more money. However, those same systems are 'not better' if you need to shoot with a film crew of 1 per camera and be on the move all the time.

So, what is it you want to shoot, what is your budget and what precisely do you mean when you say 'better' ?

i am going to buy 151 but does converting the format affect the qualuity

hi
thank you
really ia going to buy panasonic HMC151
because ia working in documentary film production
but as you said that the format of SDHC cards would first be converted

does this affect quality or resolution ????
As for quality which is better the HMC151 or the P2 ??????

In so many ways.. the end results are near identical. I had the HVX and now I have the HMC and in every sense.. the final end results are so similar that it would be hard to tell them apart. However the workflow and the consequences are lightyears apart. I was never able to shoot the sheer volume of footage as easily, nor as cheaply as I can now. Media manager was always an expense and a situation to deal with. With SDHC cards.. they last so long, are so cheap, and have been so reliable that it's a breath of freish air. Proprietary media is a think of the past....

AVCHD (SDHC) records more luma pixels than DVCPRO HD (P2). DVCPRO HD records fewer luma pixels, but more chroma pixels. AVCHD uses interframe compression. DVCPRO HD uses intraframe only compression.
