Hi, im shooting for a yoga project that will end up in standard def on a DVD. what format should i use to have a good quality d.v.d? in the book, barry green write that the best format for down converting and finish as SD and dvd is the 1080p or 720p on 60. wouldn't i get slow motion if i'll use 60 ? and why actually not to use the HA/HG/HE modes and gain long recording time?
thanks

720/60p doesn't produce slow motion, it's "live" video. If you want the "live" look, that's definitely what you'd want to use.

You're free to use the HA/HG/HE modes if you want, I mean, that's what they're there for after all. But they're all 1080i-only, so I wouldn't recommend them as my first choice for downconverting to DVD. It can probably be done just fine if you get the right post workflow, but I prefer scaling a progressive image rather than an interlaced one.

Note: you can use 720/60p for slow motion if you want to, by bringing that footage into a 24p or 30p timeline and playing it back at 40% or 50% speed. But that's not the only thing it's good for. 720/60p "as 60p" makes for an excellent live video look. If you've ever watched anything in HD on Fox or ABC or ESPN, you've seen 720/60p footage being used for the "live" image, and it looks great.

Thanks for the quick reply, i'll try to test the 1080p and the 720p on 60 to see what look is better for my project. what is the advantage of the 6o frames over the 30 ? will it give different look or less smoothens on the movement? i shoot an active yoga class for instructional DVD, not very fast movement ,but still very dynamic so i try to find the best format which will allow me to pan tilt and move with the camera smoothly as possible.
thanks

24p = "film look"
60p/60i = "live look"

30p = "somewhere inbetween"

So it's up to you to determine what look is most appropriate for your project.

thanks again, assuming i use the 720p with 60 or 30 fps, and import it to FCP with the apple pro res 422. what is the best way to down convert it into standart def format and DVD? its first time im down convert footage from the hmc150 and i want to make sure i don't make any mistakes..
