what is the best earbuds for your nano?

Charli

cool little "title"
My son's bday is coming up and he wants some earbuds for his nano. Anyone have any suggestions in what is like the most comfortable earbuds you've owned? I see Cnet's reviews on them, I was just wanting a personal opinion. My son is in his 20s, if that matters at all, and he listens to his nano a lot. Any suggestions appreciated.

The rubber ones that go in your ear sound fantastic, but I think they are kind of dangerous as they block out all sound, and I mean ALL sound.

Charli-

I don't know what these dangfangled kids are wearing these days but I can give you my perspective. I own a pair of Etymotic E6 earbuds and they cost me a pretty penny. About $100+ bucks. Well, I always liked them because they fit so snugly and canceled out noise so I was happy with them but never felt they delivered that super "high fidelity" sound as promised. Maybe I got a lame pair, maybe I don't have a very discriminating ear, or maybe its a bit of hype. Who knows?

Well, eventually one of my buds stopped working altogether. So I had to buy a new pair. I put it off because I didn't want to shell out another $100 plus bucks. Eventually, listening to my favorite tunes in my right-ear-only began to drive me batty. So, I went to Target and figured I'd get a cheap pair and settled on the $16 dollar Skullcandy buds. Wowie!

I am not going to claim they are WAAAAAAAAAAYYY better than Etymotics (purists would have me stoned) but THESE Skullcandy buds are way better than MY etymotics ever were. They do a fantastic job with the whole gamut...from the crystal high notes to the deep resonant base sounds...and whats more their volume capacity is WAY higher.

So, needless to say, I am a big believer in saying "screw you" to etymotic, shures, bose, and other incredibly high priced 'buds etc. You can get a really great performance for less than $20 bucks believe me. I know, you are probably thinking "but, but, but I can't just get him a $16 dollar pair of earbuds..." Well, with the savings...buy him a sweater too!:cheesy:

Etymotic ER6i... used one time... all accessories inc. and in the box (appears new)... my ears aren't Etymotic ears... the rubber ones nor the foam tips make me happy. $49 shipped.

I'd jump on that deal from Matt. I got a pair of Etymotic ER6i's because I'm not real big on flying and trying to listen to music or watch a movie on a plane is impossible to hear with the regular earbuds. I bought these and on my next flight I forgot I was even on a plane.

Plus I have weird shaped ear canals I guess, because the standard iPod buds won't stay in my ear at all, these however work great, nice and snug.

I want to try the Skullcandys, I am the same as Chris f, the stock earbuds will not stay in my ear and when they do, they are turned wrong and mute the sound a lot.

Costco has some sort earbud kit right now with three sizes of ear covers, two airline adapters and a little pouch for $38.00, I almost bought it yesterday, but now I think I may try the Skullcandys first.

For sake of full disclosure... I don't find the Etymotics comfortable... I like how they sound, but I can't stand them for more then 20 minutes. I changed the rubber tips out for foam and at first I thought "great!" and then again, about 20 minutes later... hmm... ears hurting.

Say what you want, but I've tried a bunch of earbuds and right now my favorite bang for the buck is the V-Moda Bass Freq... they have them at Amazon for $25 or under (shipped) in whatever color you want.

Yeah... maybe they aren't "reference" grade earphones, but I have Etymotics (used ONE time... changed tips... continued... then 20 minutes later boxed 'em back up)... and I actually prefer the overall sound of the bass freq. I have my ipod set to flat, and I don't listen super-loud... and the sound, to me, is just right... nice and thick, but not overly so... for a young guy I'd be surprised if these V-Modas don't do the trick... I've given away 2 sets now (and ordered 2 more on the way right now)... they are my fav IEMs... even at twice the price.

I've also got the Sony MDR-E90lp (referencing the CNET recommendation posted above) and you can have those for $25 shipped. (again very uncomfortable and doesn't isolate like the IEMs do, so weak bass and weaker overall sound)

The V-MODA Vibe is FRAGILE... they go out where the wire connects to the bud... so those are out too.

I tried a lot of buds... the first set I was happy with was the bass freq model V-MODA... and I continued to try other buds after, but I keep going back to those. I'm not saying there are other good choices out there... but I just thought I should save somebody from at least 3 of the models suggested in the reviews above.

Am I the only one disturbed by not being able to hear any outside sound?...I understand if you're on an airplane, but out jogging, or at the gym even, I like to have some auditory awareness of my surroundings. Even at home, I'd like to know if someone in the other room is killing my family or robbing me blind. This is why I still use my open air headphones for my ipod. They don't sound as good, but when I'm jogging or at the gym I'm not really appreciating the music anyway so much as using it for inspiration and ambience. When I want to appreciate every nuance of the music, I blast it on my stereo system, or use big, over the ear headsets.

We've had a few skullcandy endorsements, but no model given. Which skullcandy everybody? I'm always up for a test and I'll buy some to try against the V-Modas that I currently enjoy.

I'd love to discover that I was missing something.

V-mode and skull candy, which brand skull candy? These are the two I'm going to go with, well, one or the other.

And I want to thank everyone for their replies.

THESE are the ones I bought. Cheap enough to test 'em out and throw 'em away.

I'm actually very interested in getting your feedback or reading your side-by-side comparative review.
