what is pull down removal?

HD covers a number of formats and speeds. Some of the speeds do overlap with NTSC.
DF doesn't have anything to do with color.

DVX uses non-Drop time code for 24 modes, DF for other modes as I recall.
This is a timecode issue where you want to keep the number system the same from your capture and through your edit if possible. An editing system can get confused if the wrong one is used and if so will use a different section that you had planned.

24p = 23.98fps
24fps = 24fps

If you're editing something that is going straight to film, then you would edit at 24fps. If it's for broadcast or dvd, then you need to use 24p (which is 23.98fps).

If if you're in Final Cut and you create a 24p sequence, it should read as being 23.98fps. As well, all of your captured 24p clips should read as 23.98fps. If they don't, you'll need to recapture them and make sure you stop the capture before you reach a blank area of your tape.

oh, so if i captured in a normal project (dv ntsc) i can't import the same media into a 23.98 project? also, i don't see an option for both anamorphic AND 23.98 under the a/v settings, is there a way to set it to both? (i shot in F5 with squeeze) thanks so much for this info.

I'm not sure about mixing 29.97 fps with 23.98 sequences, but I believe that article on Ken Stone's site that was posted on the first page of this thread explains how to handle this.

To answer your other question though, you'll need to make a custom setting that handles 24p and anamorphic. It seems strange that they left that out of Final Cut, but it's easy enough to copy the existing one and enable anamorphic.

am i crazy or is there only a 23.98 option under sequence settings and not under capture presets? is this right? can i do dv ntsc anamorphic for capture preset and 23.98 for sequence setting?

You "can" set up capture settings and Sequence settings to all sorts of non-native formats in FCP. You just won't have much RT playback on some.

I thought capturing/editing in 24p was a preset and native process for fcp5? what do most people do when editing F5 24p footage for dvd, or internet viewing.

Yes, but the beginning of this thread states that advanced pull down is for 24pA, My confusion is on 2 different points, maybe someone can clarify.

1. What preset should one use for 24P (not advanced, just Scene File F5) footage shot in squeeze mode?

2. Can I bring 24p footage that I originally captured in a non 24p project, into a 24p sequence?

Thanks

There is a really good tutorial on that here in the forums somewhere, and one on Ken Stone's site, that cover the whole issue clearly. I think some issues are being confused here. Find those two tutorials, read them, they are both very well written.
