i am capturing in fcp and noticed diff options under capture settings... what is pull down removal? compared to regular dv or anamorphic? whats the diff if i used pull down removal

If you are running the latest version of FCP (5.1) the "DV NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal" is the setting you use to import anything shot on your DVX using 24 Advanced. It removes the correct frames from your footage to import true 24 fps into the timeline.

yeah, shooting 24pA adds extra frames so that you can record 24 frames a sec to video tape (which records 30) so when you capture that footage you need to use the remove advanced pulldown setting which will remove the extra frames so ur left with 24 frames you want

Once you've imported with the pulldown removal, should you be using a 23.98fps sequence or a 24fps sequence?

This topic, for some reason, always leaves me a bit wonkey.

Why edit on a 23.97 time line if the camera is imoprting 24 progressive scanned images?

Or is it not really 24 frames?

It is only referred to as 24 frames, in reality it is 23.97 because of the whole video sharing space with sound issue, in the same way 30 frames is actually 29.97.

When color was added it was decided to make the new NTSC system backwards compatible with the old monochrome system by adding the color information on a sub-carrier. However, it was found that the color signal would interfere with the audio subcarrier, and hence it was decided to solve this by fractionally adjusting the frame rate of NTSC television from precisely 30 frames per second (60 interlaced fields per second) to approximately 29.97 frames per second (approximately 59.94 interlaced fields per second).

There is no 30i. There's 60i which is 59.94.
The rounded terms are used to keep things easy but when you get into the nitty gritty of specifying true fps it needs to be correct.

I know this topic is oft exhausted, but I'm still confused... I shot in s5, 24p normal, because I was told it would be best if ever needed to output to film, now I am editing in a 29.97 timeline and I have a lot of interlace lines with movement, so should I be editing in a 23.98 timeline? What difference does it make?

If you shoot 24p, always edit in a 24p timeline, always always always.

Unless you'll also be mixing in 29.97 content. That's really the only reason ever to not edit in a 24p timeline.

When editing 24p, it's better to have shot in 24pA, but 24p normal is fine.

There's 60i which is 59.94

60i is 29.97 fps or 59.94 fields per second.

should you de-interlace the 24p clip when mixing with 29.97, am i correct on this?

Not sure what your actually asking so I will assume you mean:

Should you deinterlace a 24p clip when you edit it on a 29.97 timeline?

Then the answer is NO. Set your Sequence / setting to no fields .

No, you should never de-interlace 24p footage.

De-interlacing is an obsolete technique that should be exterminated from any progressive-scan-shooter's vocabulary.

De-interlace = de-stroy footage.

If you shot 24p normal mode (2:3 pulldown) you can drop that on the timeline with 29.97 footage and edit the two together easily. They will look different, one will look like film and the other like video, but they'll both be 59.94 field video and will intermix compatibly on the timeline.

are we talking about sequence settings only here? and if so, there seems to be a 24 option and a 23.98 option... which one is correct for 24p?

Yeah I'm confused about this too. When I shoot my feature next year I plan to shoot in 24pn which I will import into FCP as 24p. As far as I understand it HD has nothing to do with NTSC and therefore nothing to do with DF which was necessary to introduce colour into the signal.

If I'm shooting in 24p and only plan to go to NTSC when I create my mpeg 2 files for dvd distribution, why do I have to edit with drop-frame time code?
