Hopefully there is someone who knows what is going on. Im working on a 30 second spot which will be shown at a motorshow in Canada. Drift cars etc blah blah. Anyway the organisers via the company have said the "DVD" needs to be either beta of flash? what the.... now I am pretty sure there is some confusion at my client end however I thought I better just do a quick check to make sure the world didnt turn upside down when I was asleep last night.

I know what Beta and flash are in their usual terminology which makes no sense at all.

naw.. he's got it all wrong mate. What you mean is "DVDs are beta than flash!" ... . . . . ...

Yah, that's strange... he has his delivery formats screwed up -- Beta SP tape or Macromedia Flash file on CD/DVD or NTSC DVD?

That's a world of difference between all those, isn't it?

You're not crazy, he is.

I would just say "what final delivery media would you like?"

No I am going to get them to email me the specs they are sending to all advertisers. That way I should have the first hand info......

Yeah I think so Barry. But then what does he want the beta tape? Or flash on a DVD rom? heh.. waiting for a callback from Canada now.

Maybe they also want it ported to Flash 8/9, being a 30 sec spot, they might be trying to tap the web as well. They might want everything....DVD+ROM+FLASH+BETASP+16MM+35MM+LASERDISC+VHS+VTR+HAIKU.....pesky clients ;)

LOL well they still havent got back to me with exact specs, so maybe some confusion going on their end.

That's confusing. I don't know what I'd do if a client of mine said something like that to me. Maybe they just meant that the final product has to be on beta or in flash and that there is no actual dvd? Who knows, good luck w/ that one.

Actually can you believe I finally got a response today? Man they are making it hard. Anyway the final answer was (read carefully):

A standard DVD that will play in anyones home DVD player : not mpeg/avi/qt etc

Now why was that so hard to communicate to me?

Clients tend to be really bad at this! You're usually best off going right back to the source, ideally find out who their destination is and liaise directly with a tech on that end. You get things like clients insisting that they want a Beta tape when we know that the tape's destination is someone like mtv (who most definitely prefer Digi). If you can tell them that a tech on their end said X is fine, then that will swing even the most stubborn ;) Web versions are a can of worms too- lots of people still request different levels of Real, etc. versions when you can get much better coverage with qt/flash. The latest one is asking for mpeg4 files .. would be easier if they just 'told' me that they wanted it for youtube :)

Because people are afraid to admit their ignorance. I've seen it again and again, and when someone does know something they're afraid to speak up.
