What is "Force 16-bit processing" ?

Many effects plug-ins have a "Force 16-bit processing" option than you can select. But the Avid project settings allow you to choose 16-bit processing for effects rendering. Is the plug-in's 16-bit option only useful when you are otherwise using 8-bit processing in the project settings?

It does have something to do with color space. Less banding and artifacting when applying multiple effects. You ALWAYS want to do in effects in the highest bit-depth possible. So my question is: do you get any advantage by selecting an effect's "force 16-bit processing" option when I've already selected "render in 16-bits" in the Avid project Settings? I mean, doesn't selecting "render 16-bit" in the Settings force ALL effects to be 16-bit? What would the effect's individual 16-bit option give me in this case? I do notice when I select the "force 16-bit" effect option I get a very slight "gamma shift." But this doesn't mean anything to me.
