What is component out socket on HPX171?

Hi

What is the component out socket used for?

What format video comes from there?

What devices can I connect it to?

Thank you.

Hi NewHPXuser,
I'm in the same position as you, wondering about component out. All I know so far is it's a video only signal, no audio, which is made up of Red Green and Blue elements. As a previous owner of a DVX100 I'm used to having a composite out ( red and white audio and yellow video) which I've used to playback through a tv monitor. I do a lot of media training where I have to playback instantly what has been recorded, and found myself last week in a sticky situation using the HPX for the first time and realising there was no composite out from the camera. Eventually they found me a a big plasma screen with RGB inputs and a pair of computer speakers which I attached to the headphone socket, so I got away with it but I can see it's going to be an issue in future.

I'd like to know if there is some kind of adaptor available which converts a Component out signal to a composite signal to go into standard TV sets. I can always use a mini jack to phono cable to take sound to the TV.

And also how does the SDI output figure in this? Can this be converted to run through a regular TV for playback?

I'm sure the more technically minded among you are cringing at this but any simple explanations would be gratefully received.

I can help you - and you may kick yourself - but there is a composite white, red, yellow connection that you wanted - as per dvx.

Looking at the lens it is located on the left hand side just by the hand grip. It's a pull off cover if you look close.

The connection I am referring to is at the rear - behind that pull off tab - and labelled component out.

I also echo the question re: SDI out. What can I connect to that?

Yes, Kicking hard as I write! Found the composite out sockets. So my problems solved. Thanks for that!

So, as far as component out goes, I can only assume that being divided into the RGB elements it is a higher quality signal than the composite, which combines the three. As I say the plasma TV I used had Component inputs which I connected using the BNC adaptors that came with the camera. It was a lovely looking image.

Maybe somebody else can tell us about the SDI out.

Absolutely loving the results from this camera by the way.

composite and component are a bit older and pretty much non existent in newer devices(unless there still trying to be backward compatible like new TVs).

as far as i can remember they carry analog signals, composite being sd only, while component can go higher, i think up to 720p(not sure if it's a limitation of hardware or just a choice of manufactures).

if you want to connect to an older tv that doesn't have a component out and your sure you will only be sending sd signal you can get a cable/converter to do that(any radioshack type store that sells tv and other entertainment type electronics).

if you want to see the video on a computer, you can check out some products from black magic (or aja). they might also include recording(on the low end it might be a specific codec only like a flavour of h.264, on the high end, it might be either prores 422, or any format you would like, if you have fast enough hardware).

it's an older technology, so don't spend to much money on a sinking ship. or try to find something that will also work for hdmi or sdi or hd-sdi

Oooh - I thought one of the ports on the back gave you basically raw HD footage without compression. That's why I was asking what I could connect to it to capture that.

So I'm dissapointed. Why/what did I read somewhere about that then I wonder?

I can't see any other ports hiding away.

It is an HD SDI OUT, meaning it should carry uncompress HD as well as SD signal depending what format you are shooting. T:huh:here is a menu in the camera that allows you to choose what is coming out this output, you can even turn it off if you like...
