What is causing this? (see images)

I've always had a problem with horizontal lines when a Magic Bullet filter has been applied to a video and exported as a movie. While in Premiere the clip looks fine. It's only after the movie has been rendered that the lines appear, and it's definitely only when Magic Bullet has been applied. Has anyone seen this before and is there a solution to get rid of it? Magic Bullet is an amazing product, I can't imagine this is how everyone's films look like when exported.

Exported frame, prior to Magic Bullet being applied. No lines.

Exported frame, Magic Bullet is being applied. Looks fine.

After Magic Bullet was applied and the movie was rendered. This is how it looks when played in Premiere, Windows Media Player, Quicktime, and on an external monitor.

Any help woud be appreciated. Thank you.

looks like compression over compression.... try to export a sequence of TGA's for testing...

hmm. yeah, i havent gotten that from using MB before. id try exporting using a different codec and see if its still the same?

Thanks. I exported some Targa sequences and the same lines appear. I also tried a quicktime (instead of a DV AVI) and the lines were still there.

What is strange is that the lines only appear when and where a MB filter is applied. Meaning, if the first half of the video has no MB and the last half has MB, then the first half has no lines. So I don't think it's a compression over copression problem or it would apprear over the entire clip. Weird.

Thanks for the quick replies.

do you have more than one effects applied to the clips with MB applied? you could try rearrranging the order of the effects. put MB first. and the rest after. if its already first.. try it last. it might mess with the look a little pending the other effects applied so you might have to twaek a little. but i would just try it on one clip and export only a work area for the one clip and see if it helps.

I just tried using Adobe Encoder, exporting an MPEG-2 and the lines are still visible. I hope it's something simple I'm overlooking, but since it's only happening with MB applied it makes it frsutrating.

iamloser - It is the only effect and I'm only using a very short clip as a test. If you look on "The Loner" you can see the lines in some of the darker areas (movie theater scenes).

Ummmmm.........are you addressing a large crowd of eggs???

"We realize your concerns, and we only kept it from you to protect your own self esteem. But don't worry....right now we are working on a public ad campaigne to educate the masses, to help bring about the view that there is nothing inherently wrong with something just because it comes from a chicken ass. I'll take three questions, and then I must go......ok......you....the offwhite here in the front...."

Holy crap! No, I didnt know about that! I'm quite relieved, as I was afraid you may have dropped the helmut thing in leau of simply encasing the Thai people in full body shells for their own protection. Thanks for pointing me to the link...I'm sure this is going to be good....I'll download a bit this eve when I have time to get them at 3.6kbps (you dialup deserter!).

I don't use magic bullet but make sure the interlace/non-interlace is set correctly. It could be it's trying to do something to alternating lines.

Also check your MB settings. DV does have compression artifacts and it's possible you're raising the blacks a bit or doing something that accentuates the lines. Take before and after into Photoshop and do a difference/auto levels to see what's going on clearer.

Thanks Scott and Frizzle. I tried both your suggestions and I have good news and bad news. The good news is it's not Magic Bullet. I bumped the contrast and brightness and found the lines on other rendered footage that didn't have MB applied. I haven't found the lines on any footage captured from the camera. It seems to be happening after it's been put through Premiere Pro. The bad news is I now have no clue what is causing it.

Has anybody else seen these lines before? Thanks again for yur advice everyone.

I always see those lines...on every video from the web...the higher the quality of the video, the more distinct they are...like watching through venician blinds. Maybe it's the conversion from non-square to square pixels?

Burn a DVD and see what it looks like on the tv.

GenJerDan - I think you're right about the web quality. I just saw the Reign of Fallen trailer in the Clips section and they had the same lines. But these lines are not from compressing for web. I'm using the DV AVI (no loss) straight from Premiere to get the highest quality possible. Even then there are lines. And I've tried interlaced, non-interlaced and it still shows up. I preview everything on a TV and the lines are not as visible but they are still there.

Has anyone else checked out the Reign of Fallen trailer? It has the same lines, so I'm not alone. Dang it, I want to be special!!!
