What is all the other "stuff" on the SD card?

Can somebody fill me in on what all the other stuff is on the SD card? I'm copying over a bunch of footage from 8 different cards and am wondering if I need to copy the entire "private" folder or if I should just be copying the files from the "stream" folder? It's obvious that I definitely need the MTS files but what is all the other stuff? Thanks.

Copy the whole thing. Some NLE's need the full file structure to recognize the footage as AVCHD.

Final Cut Pro needs the entire file structure, if you fail to copy the private folder or decide to delete some files manually then you'll have problems with "Log and Transfer" on FCP, in witch case you'll need an alternative way to transcode the footage... In some other NLE's you only need the stream folder!

In either way is not like it takes up much space to keep the entire thing!

I take it, shooting with an HDD-based camcorder and offloading MTS files onto external media when the built-in HDD is filled up will not be an option with FCP.

I have a couple of clients that have requested camera to DVD transfers on some HDD cameras, i just do it on toast (fast and easy) but I'm pretty sure i could find a way to work with the footage on FCP, But i think there shouldn't be a problem because every time i plug one of those cameras in, iMovie opens up and wants to play with the video, I will imagine FCP would do too (just not sure on the workflow)

google on the camera + FCP? might give you a better idea =)
