What is a wide angle converter?

This is a total n00b question from a total n00b, but I just bought a used DVX100b that came with a Century .7 wide angle converter. I've done a little looking around here and the web to try and avoid sounding like a total idiot for my ignorance, but I haven't found an answer yet.

So my stupid question is simply: What the hell is it?

My assumption is that it allows the DVX to shoot in 16:9 without needing to letterbox or squeeze through the camera's settings, but I have no idea how it would accomplish that.

In addition to figuring out what it is, assuming it does what I think it does, are there any downsides to using one?

It doesn't shoot 16:9, that's what an anamorphic adapter is for. The wide angle converter will allow you, essentially, "zoom out" farther than the stock lens is capable of. The Century Optics converter is a quality piece of glass. I think you'll like it.

It basically what Horsefilms said.
it gives you a wider capture range, which means it allows you to capture a larger range of view vs. normal/standard lense
*just think of a fisheye withought the distortion.....sorta
