what is a matte box?
what is it used for?
and for what situations is it best suited for?

IM gona be doing indie films and music videos.

IS this thing a real plus.
It damn sure looks cool no matter what.
I wanna get every last bit of quality and film look out of my camera as possible.

Im not rich enough to buy a 15,000 camera but i can buy all the best supplies for my 3000 camera!

Talk with Rush from EVS - he can get you setup right. I just bought a 4x4 CAvision Matte box from him and it cost $540 + S&H. And it will work on the HVX as well. It is a great setup with rails, 2 filter stages, and a flag.

The biggest thing that a matte box will do is block unwanted light from entering the lens and giving you that lens flair. If you plan on being outside, it will help you out a lot - you can also put some nice filters in it as well - ND grad, Polarizer ...

I say it is worth the money. But if your choice is inbetween a matte box and audio gear, or nice lighting gear, then get the audio or lighting gear. You can always put black wrap around your lens and that will bloack the light in a pinch.
