What happened to the forum structure?

i just moved everything into the dslr in motion section. had a little accident with the footy section, but it's fixed now.

:( move makes me sad. Now we have to dig... :(

This camera isn't just one of the DSLRs...maybe it should go under Panasonic?

it's one click and you are there... like most of the other camera forums on this site. that's not digging.

With a new vdslr coming out every 3 months, the enormous popularity of this camera has waned and lessened the need for it to have it's own dedicated section.

I can put it in the panny section, but it will be the same depth as it is now.

Downgrade drama: Ramsey harshes on GH1! don't miss the episode that will change everything!

BTW Jason, I really like your avatar but have you ever considered removing a frame or two round where the head emerges? It stalls in a really weird way that makes it hard to read any thread you're in. Though I guess it's one way to make sure people look at what the admin posts :-)

I would like to see it in the Panasonic section (this being DVX user and all...and also because it doesn't have much in common with the other vDSLRs, a new vDSLR is coming out every so often but mainly as incremental updates to previous models but the GH1 remains a beast of it's own, etc.) The DVX is still there in the Panasonic forum, it didn't get lumped into say, Older Cameras (not that there is a thread) and I feel like the GH1 is still an incredibly popular camera and deserves to be up there with it's Panasonic brethren...sorry if I'm not making a coherent or compelling argument...I'm about to go to bed.

Do we have any evidence to support that the popularity of this camera has waned? Seems like just as many posts as ever on the GH1 forum...I'd attribute any decline to less posting in those "omfg where is my camera I hate panasonic" threads.

out of curiosity... what doesn't it have very much in common with vdslr's? As far as I can tell, it has far more in common with them (since it is one) than it does any of the other panny cams we have listed.

The panny section and sony section, etc are for your more traditional style cameras. DSLR in Motion is for exactly these types of cameras... And, if things continue as they are, we'll likely see these cams trumping the other camera sections we do have in terms of placement. Some of these cams (as many as keep coming out) will stick hard, and they'll need an organizational structure to reflect that if/when the time comes.

But, giving top billing to every hot new kid on the block or creating sections for every new one of these cameras will (in the long run) likely prove more counterproductive than anything else.

It's not a "demotion"... It's just an organizational thing. We'll see where the chips fall. The forum needs restructuring. Some stuff needs to be buried a bit, and others will need more room to grow.

There is a line that we have to walk. Especially as large a forum as we are, and the vast number of topics covered, it's all to easy to turn the forum into a cluster f* with good intentions. :)

But, I'm always open to suggestions, and there will likely be some more re-organization to come in the future... and not just concerning the 900 vdslr cams coming to market.

later,
Jason

>This camera isn't just one of the DSLRs.

If you come from photography it competes to DSLRs. I bought in the past a HD consumer camera and it was never used. The big one were neven even a remote option. The 5D2 and GH1 changed this for me and others big time. I think 5D2, 7D, D90, D300s and GH1 are one category.

I think the organization is fine now.

Yeah, I was just thinking of suggesting this the other day. I was getting tired of scrolling down from the GH-1 section to check the news on the Canons.

I guess since it's a consumer grade product updates to it will be rolled out faster than with the prosumer and pro stuff...hmmm.

I guess what I was trying to say is that yes, it doesn't have a mirrorbox, it uses an EVF, etc. It uses focus assist and other video like features. It says HD and AVCHD on the body, and HD on the lens...all prominently placed. It has a kit lens designed pretty much specifically for video shooting. It uses the m4/3 system which hopefully we'll be seeing some prosumer and pro level dedicated video systems from Panasonic using....basically myself and others too think of the GH1 as first and foremost a video camera and secondly a still camera, and I think the feature set reflects that....really all it has in common with DSLRs is the body shape.

They could just as easily have put it in a handheld video camera shaped body, with the same flip-out LCD, viewfinder, etc, and it would function exactly the same as it does now, probably even better....you can't really say the same for the vDSLRs...they're pretty much bound to that form-factor by the nature of the system. I mean sure you could put them into something shaped like a videocamera, but it wouldn't function like one the way the GH1 would...not really sure what point I'm trying to make there other than that the GH1 is clearly more stacked toward video than the others in terms of overall design and feature-set.

Lastly, and most compellingly for it to be at least on the top of the DSLR section: You're right new cameras are coming out all the time, and we shouldn't be putting them above cameras that have been out and that all of us have been making amazing stuff with.......so why is the GH1 listed below the 7D, a camera which has not even been released, much less actually shipping, yet? Is this done purely by post per day popularity? I would suggest that it be done by overall posts, until a camera's clear successor is released (the GH2 to the GH1 or the GL2 to the GL1, not the 7D to the 5D or the HVX to DVX).

Sorry if any of that seems shallow...I am not trying to be a total GH1 fanboy, it just bothers me that everyone is acting like the camera is being supplanted in the hearts and minds of everyone here when I don't believe it actually is, and that there are mainly a few people from the Canon sections coming over and trolling, and that a few people were upset by the 7D (which I really don't understand...that camera is not more attractive to me than the GH1...it's too heavy and doesn't have the live-view features I need.) I really don't think anyone is fleeing from the GH1, and new threads on people asking about buying one, the fact that when I had it out next to a full-on HVX (with letus, rails, mattebox, monitor, etc) a 5D mk II, and a D90, at the club festival at our university I got more questions about it and people who had heard of it and people wanting to see it and wondering how I managed to get my hands on one and how it was, etc, than any of the people with the other camera setups did. That said I had it up on rails with a monitor and a microphone and handles and all that good stuff.

So put it in the vDSLR section if you want, put it under the 7D, or the new 1D or whatever other stuff comes out that is STILL A DSLR first and foremost, but let nobody say that this camera is irrelevant, or in it's twilight hours...it is not. I suspect we're looking at the DVX of the vDSLRs. You know, that one that everyone bought and used for waaaaay to long even as all the new stuff was coming out but it didn't matter beacuse they were making kick-ass images? Yeah. That one. My GH1 and I will see you in 7 years. (ok I might get the GH-100a or the 100b.)

No one is saying the camera is irrelevant, far from it.
So please don't take the forum move that way.

With a site this large, and with so many members, keeping things organized is paramount - and I would venture to guess that most new members (and lurkers) looking for information on the GH1 would go first to the DSLR section of the site. Also, you can say what you will about the differences between the GH1 and the other DSLRs out there - and I agree with you - but you can't deny that it has more in common with other DSLRs than it does with the other cameras on this site.

This was purely an organizational move, not a judgement on the GH1.

Well, that's kinda my point and reasoning as well :) Does that quarter inch difference between where it is now and where it would be if I sorted it to be above the 7d really impact the browsing that much? It wasn't really a conscious decision.. That's just where it fell when I moved the stuff.

The camera isn't being supplanted, and it still has the most in-depth sub-forums of any of these cams. But, at the same time... there isn't really a need for it to be all on its own anymore like it was. Just wait and see what sticks. Any and all of these sections can and will grow/move as appropriate. I just wasn't prepared for how quickly this market is moving. It's an extremely competitive market and the dust hasn't even begun to settle yet. Different than the days of the dvx.

Let's just not be too sensitive about this or over-analyze it :) b/c most of the suggestions I've heard seem to be based purely from a symbolic nature/need, rather than a practical one. The important thing is that there is a home here for the tools that our members are choosing to use. It's up to the members to decide how useful a resource these sections will be, which will in turn dictate their prominence. Cart before the horse.
