What good are .SMI, .PPN, .XML, and .BIM files from my Sony EX1 ??

There's something I don't understand about the shot file set up in my Sony EX1, and I would be most grateful to anyone who would explain it to me.

Every time I do a shot, there is a file within a file within a file. Why?

I have been told that it is NOT good to pull a file from out of it's mother file, but I don't understand what the big deal is if I do.

It seems to me that the only file that matters is the MP4 file, so why bother with the .SMI, .PPN, .XML, or .BIM files ? What good are they anyway, and why should they have to accompany the others?

When it comes to the final editing in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 in a Windows7 PC, it seems to me that the MP4 file is the one you'd use and the one with the highest quality anyway.

Any help, advise, or explanations would be appreciated.

Thanks.
