What Gear to Buy Mega-Thread

Hey everyone. I've been visiting this site for a couple months now, familiarizing myself with the camera and gear and workflow, etc., because in late March or early April I intend to take the plunge into the world of HDSLRs and purchase a GH2. (if I can find one!)

Every once and awhile I see someone come on here and post some variation of the "What gear/lens/tripod/etc should I buy?" question, which is sorta vague and is often not very helpful, because different people have different needs, different budgets, and different styles.

But I think if done correctly, hearing what others use with their GHx camera could be really useful, so I was wondering if we could use this thread for existing GHx owners to help out the newbies by listing in what area of production they predominantly use their GH cameras, and then list the gear they use, in order of importance to them.

That way, we could find out not only what gear is useful and figure out our budgets accordingly, but specifically within the needs for our type of filming, as I could see that the gear a wedding videographer uses, would differ greatly from someone shooting mostly sit-down interviews, which would differ greatly from someone shooting narrative movies, etc.

So if you like this idea and want to help out, please list what area of filmmaking you use your GHx for, and the gear you have for it, in order of importance (or frequency of using it if you prefer). Those of us yet to buy our camera and equipment thank you in advance.

Its a noble effort but no one's every gonna agree to which equipment is best... you just have to identify what you want to achieve in your shooting, research what equipment works best for that, then research whats the best equipment you can afford.... theres never an easy answer. Too many variables!

That's just it. Not looking for anyone to agree. I'm just curious to see how different members prioritize what they use, with the additional knowledge of what type of filming they are using it for.

Ok I will play. I am doing more atmospheric short music and exotic location peaces.

Most important thing to get is a tripod. Get what ever you can afford. OK sticks with a fluid head will run you $300 pro stuff can be in the thousands. I have a basic tripod the Libec TH-950DV.

Second most important thing to me are ND filters. I have fast glass and to get that shallow DOF I use a ND64 filter. At one point i had ND2, ND4 and ND8 now I only carry schneider ND8 and ND64. Buy something that will not give you a purple cast, which means the top shelf stuff.

Lens. I have a set of Contax G 28mm 45mm and 90mm. I also have a Tokina 11-16mm F2.8. For a more filmic look I use Canon FD 24mm F2 and Canon FD 50mm F1.2L
The next lenes that I plan to buy are the Canon 85mm 1.2L, Canon 135mm F2 and I have a 17mm F4 on the way. As soon as the Voghtlander 25mm .95 is more avalable I do plan on getting that as well. Lens are extremely important and really don't matter that much to me........ there is no short awawer for this but I guss I will try to explane below.

I have a cheap $20 carp lens that when stopped down to F8 will look 90% as good as my $800 awsome lens. The reason I need the expenive lens is it lets me do something special, like shoot at F1.2 and still be sharp. I like the look of FD's and I also like the modren look of Contax.

Lights, just bought 2 600 led panels of eBay and am planing to get more. The power were I live is too sketchy to be running a quartz kit. I just got them yesterday, I will be doing a review of them soon.

Audio would normally be right up on the top of the list if you need to record it. Don't own anything at the moment but planing on a big investment in this area in the near futre.

I think the only thing on my list that is going to be universal is a tripod and nd filters, from a image only standpoint.
