I'm looking for a small sized firewire external hard drive for my powerbook to travel with me. I want to leave my G Raid at home with the G5. My only prerequistes are that it works really well......I'm not picky :) Any suggestions?

Marlene,

I have had great luck with the Maxtor drives I have bought. The only drive, from personal knowledge, that I would definitely stay away from is the LaCie. Mine died and I had to send it to a data recovery service to save the data...not cheap. Since then, I've read dozens of horror stories concerning the LaCie. I've got 5 Maxtors that I've been using from 1 month to one and half years with no problems. But that's just my experience.

I'm using them with my PowerBook G4.

Hmmmm.....Maxtor's have such a bad reputation that I've stayed away from them. Would you mind telling me what model you have? I tried a Seagate but it kept unmounting on me so I guess it couldn't handle FCP. Now that's my biggest issue, I want to be sure I get a drive that can keep up with FCP. Thanks!!!

I'm using the Maxtor One Touch and Maxtor One Touch II, both 250 and 300 GB. I got mine at the Apple Store and as I said, I've never had a problem with the Maxtors. Maybe I've just been lucky, who knows. It was only when I wanted a 500 GB drive and went to the LaCie that I had a problem.

My LaCie 200 died in a month. I returned it and they only had a 250 in stock, and that is what I have now. I am going to get a G-Drive soon.

"I have the Graid, I was just looking for something a little smaller that could travel with me in my powerbook case. Thanks!"

They make smaller ones.

I have a Maxtor one touch 300GB external firewire drive and have had no problems. I also use a 200GB Western Digital drive and it works great too, even with reformatting from Windows to Mac - it did it without complaints or difficulties. I haven't really heard the bad rep on Maxtor, but have definitely heard it about LaCie.

Thanks to all for your input. I broke down and just bought another G-Raid. I really like the one I have and after much research I just couldn't find one smaller in size that I could trust like I trust my G-Raid. So it won't fit in my laptop case......I'll manage, it's not like it's that huge.

Got here too late...

Some friends i have have been buying internal drives and then buying a housing for it. They are small, sleek, run off firewire power and hold quite a bit now.

next time maybe

To follow up on Rook's post:
buy an internal hard drive
buy a firewire case
assemble, and viola! a external drive.

Benefits: the internal drives usually have a longer warranty (Maxtor has 3 years for internal, only 1 for external); usually cheaper; you can always upgrade the drive to get more space later.

Make sure you get a good case - I use Wiebetech cases myself.
