What exactly is on a P2 Card, do you ask?

According to a recent post on Cinematography.com, this:

The filenames appear to be alphabetical, but the numbering resets to zero when you swap cards. So, importing the contents of several cards would leave you with hundreds of files in a random order. Now, what am I supposed to do about that? How is the media manager in FCP5 going to deal with this?

Is it possible to keep the .avi file open and record every take into one file. That way every shot would be a file, and far more managable. I know it would stop me deleting dud takes, but I don't fancy deleting ANY of footage anyway.

this is where meta data will be most helpful.... you should be able to name your clip (ie slate the clip digitally with the camera) so this should be an issue.. and since just about all files on a mac use Meta data, I don't think FCP 5 will have a problem with this... I can't speak for other NLE's though

Funny, Jan, at the Res Fest presentation, said that Apple does not support Meta Data.
What's up with that?

From a programming standpoint, just about all files on the mac support meta data... and I am pretty confident that apple with update FCP 5 to support it if it doesn't already... I don't see it as an issue personally..

Files are .mxf, NOT .avi

The filenames are UMID( check up on you mxf-knowledge), Unique Identifiers. This ensures that every mxf clip has a unique filename, which is necessary for most NLE's like Avid and broadcast-size mediamanagement, who store and manage many thousand of hours of videofootage. Dupe filenames are a nightmare.

And anyway, say you have 10 hours of footage, 20 sec average shot-time, that makes 1.800 indivual clips. Are you going to name each clip indivually? Duh.

Forget about naming actual clip names, today there are far better methods. Each clip has an automatic thumbnail, and a lot of info is stored in a XML-file as metadata ( time/date, shooter, location, iris, zoomfactor,... ) If you really want, you can use the P2 Viewer software to add/change metadata for groups of clips. When adding clips into Avid, all XML metadata is automatically checked-in the Avid database.
