what dslr video would match best with the fs100?

if you needed a dslr as a "b" camera to the fs100, which would you choose?

canon 5d/7d/60d?

panasonic gh2?

which matches the sony color scheme and shoots 1080p/24?

any and all thoughts are appreciated.

be well

As far as looks, might be able to have more flexibility matching the Sony FS100 to one of those DSLRs then vice-versa.

I have a GH2 and it combo's pretty nicely with the FS100, one of my mates is about to buy a NEX-5n, so keen to see what that can do, I have only heard good things.

I thought the Philip Bloom's NEX-5n looked a lot like the FS100. I'm planning on buying that as my b-cam after I buy the 14 other things I need to buy.

kyle-

that was funny!

my list of "must have" is equally long.

do you have a link for bloom's opinion of the nex-5n?

thanks in advance.

I think the little sony Nex

Or the 5d which doesnt match but can bring you extreme wide or extreme DOF when you need it and the FS wont deliver .. and also nice stills

I can say with absolute certainty that the 7D does NOT match well with the FS100. We shot a few things with both, and the editor I work with said afterwards "I really had to dumb down the FS100 footage to get it to match with the 7D". The resolution is MUCH different, the colors on the FS100 more saturated. The FS100 is MUCH cleaner. I'd definitely be looking at the Sony cameras instead (or GH2). I've not tried either of those.

+1 on this.

I have a Picture Profile I'll share soon which puts the FS100 next to 5D footage, but whilst there's a little something in the 5D flesh tones, and I do truly love shooting DSLR, there's just so much more in the FS100 pictures - it sits squarely between 5D and EX3 on a good day using NanoFlash. That's a 5D with Bloom settings rather than Technicolor. I'll be comparing that with Postmaster's G-Log soon (assumption: joy).

But then again, 'says he', having really enjoyed a few days of 550D shooting this week, with some great footage (but if it were anything other than location reports, they were ruined by aliasing and moire, which is why I went FS100 for those 'money shot' GVs)...

I have to admit, I love the form factor of my 7D SO MUCH MORE than the FS100, but in the times I took the 7D instead of the FS100 (for size reasons) I regretted it looking at the footage.

Come on the 7d and the 5d have been used and mixed with film. I worked on Black Swan which was shot on super 16mm and they used the canons for the subway shots, theres a new film coming called Premium Rush and the camera operator told me himself that they mixed 35mm film with 7d's for the bike shots and he saw it projected and looked great. If you use these cams the right way no one will know except the pixel peepers.

And the editors and VFX guys (with my editor hat on).

Just sain' - in the FS100 forum where many of us have been stung by micro-moire and aliasing, which is why we moved on - but still love the Canons for their form factor and immediacy.

I think it depends how much you do with your B camera. :) It can certainly be done, but it adds a lot of work. I just don't think when using the FS100 for as best as it can do, it makes a good match with the 7D at best it can do as well.

I mean, look at shots where you are underexposing a lot of the frame. The 7D loses a lot of chroma detail then. The FS100 does not. What do I do there? There are a lot of cases where the FS100 just exceeds the 7D so much that we end up getting rid of what we like in the FS100 footage to bring it down to where the 7D was.

You can say 'use the cams the right way' and that is perfectly true, but that range of 'right way' is just limited. If the Sony or GH2 matched closer to the FS100, then it would be a no brainer to use a camera that had a closer image so less work was needed to bring them together.

I was wondering this same thing. I have a 5d as well...which I thought was going to be a great b-cam because of the larger sensor, giving me more focal length options...but sadly this is proving to be a problem. The 5d is very hard to match to the FS in post. I tried everything including the Abel Cine technicolor settings and it's not even close. It just processes the image so differently. I have been seriously considering the Sony 5n for a b cam, and I think I'm pulling the trigger soon after viewing this video:

It's not as image perfect as the fs100....but it's a helluvalot closer than my 5d!

Hope the video helps. Also, here's a comparison of the Sony 5n versus a Canon 7d...which is a good reference if you are familiar with Canon DSLRs and are wondering how th 5n holds up in comparison:

Pulled the trigger. Got a 5s today and will be doing a comparison video soon. So far playing with it today it's an impressive image. Hopes are high that it will match closely. Or should I say fingers crossed? Lol
