The "X" may be a throwback to the old line of Canon Super 8 cameras, where the X designation (usually followed by the letter "L" [as in XL]) stood for eXisting Light.

Some of these cameras had a max aperture of F1.0

Then again, I could be completely off.

No clue, but here's a guess:

DV = Digital Video
X = commonly represents a variable

The DVX was the first prosumer camera to really shoot a wide variety of formats and types - 24p, 30p, 60i, many gamma settings, etc. at an affordable price. Perhaps the idea is, "Digital Video X", with X being the variable, ie, "whatever it is you want to shoot on digital video, this camera can do it!"

And the HVX just changes the D to and H to signify that it is High-Definition.

from what I recall, the DVX broken up, D= standard definition, V = video tape mechanism (uses tapes), not sure about the X.

Almost there...

Normally:
D = SD (small format/non-broadcast ?)
S = SD (full size ?)
H = HD

V = DV tape
D = DVCPRO Tape
P = P2

C = 60i
X = 24p (Except the HDX400 which had no 24p ... "oops")

That's because it also has a DV tape drive too.
As there is no HD DV tape from Panasonic, it's still clear that there must be another recoding format built in too, so the P2 is assumed.
You couldn't assume the DV tape drive if if specified P2 though.
And it wouldn't work for an SD-only camera with DVtape and P2. (But that's not going to happen.)
