or for that matter, all of romain gavras's work?

its mostly run and gun style, w/smash zooms, which says traditional video camera to me. but has some very filmic DOF at times, which throws me off a little. could be two cams?

wondering what you guys thought...

Seems like a DSLR.

Can anyone tell if it has the 5D "Full Frame" dof?

I don't think it's the camera at all, more like very good photography, acting and just capturing a "certain" mood for each piece. While I think he is talented, I personally do not like his style of shooting. He never lets the audience breathes, where's the contrast to the madness?

It's cool what he does, but makes no sense with the actual music. Would like to see him direct something more down to earth and see what he can do.

Er, couldn't it have been 16mm? You guys want to read DSLRs and HD camcorders into everything, geez. AFAIK, high-profile music videos have traditionally been shot on film.

that BTS video settles it. film it is.

seems i have completely underestimated the scope of this video. not sure why. makes sense.

what about his video for justice's stress?

could also be film, but the style is so run and gun, i dont believe it.

Yeah, I watched that video and like it as much as the MIA one. I think it was shot on film also. Yes, it LOOKs run and gun, but I believe it was highly designed and staged.

BTW, I think that the MIA video was shot on 35mm film. The camera in the Ultimatearm crane looks to me to be an Aaton 35mm camera. Those cameras have the form factor of a 16mm camera, but shoot 35mm film and would be my choice of 35mm cams if I was given a chance to shot on that format.

Plus the footage is actually from Gravas' new film called 'Redheads' apparently, then recut for the music video. Extra bit of promotion and all that.
The fact it is feature length film footage suggests it is almost definitely 35mm film. I agree with what someone said above about people thinking everything is shot on HDSLR's these days. If you have a decent budget and director with A LOT of experience, they wouldn't even consider shooting on DLSRs.

Stop it right there dude, you have no idea what you are talking about. Please don't let me list the countless professional music videos shot with HDSLRs from people with million dollar budgets. Also don't let me dig every single famous director who has used other cameras rather than film.

Time to go outside and get some fresh air, HDSLRs in many places outperform film. Even you as a DSLR user should respect your gear a lot more, there is a lot of things one can do with an HDSLR that simply cannot be done with a 35mm film camera.

I'd actually quite like you to list them, I know that DLSRs do get used on promo shoots, I'd like to know which million dollar ones have used them. For one, no-one gets million dollar budgets for music videos these days.

Music videos should not be used as a barometer. Music industry finances are so cutthroat that the most prominent reason DSLR's are used is that more money saved on cheap equipment can go into the production companies pocket when most will see these videos on youtube.

Bingo. Thankyou.
