what do you think about the metabones speed booster+canon 24-105/4 on fs 100 ?

one more real world thought - the Rokinon 24 is the weak link in the set, so buy a 16, two 35's and two 85's and two speed boosters.... add 80mm fronts... now you have a set of 16/24/35/60/85 with each lens cap labeled as such, and a small piece of camera tape over the "35mm" engraveing with "24mm" written on it, and the same for the 85 that's sitting on it's speedbooster being a 60....

the only diff between the Rokinon 24 on a standard mount and the Rokinon 35 on the SB to make a 24 is that the second 24 is a fair bit sharper and faster

if one was really into it you could always get a camera tech to engrave a "24" into a small plate that could be permently attached to the lens, and engrave new stops marks...

Still x0.7 is the math

dermot-

very helpful.

thank you.

be well.

Ok, I give up...
But you will never get the same image from the 24mm (Canon EF 24-105mm F4.0) on your sensor as when you put a 16mm (Canon EF 16-35mm F2.8) on the same Sony NEX FS100 or Sony NEX 5 camera.
Even with the SpeedBooster. The Speedbooster will give you back the 'real' number from the lens. 24mm will be 24mm. And nothing else.

Sorry but no.

The Canon EF 24-105mm F4.0 will produce a image on the Sony NEX FS100 or Sony NEX 5 sensor that looks the same as if you put a 38-168mm on a FullFrame camera.
And not a 16-73mm.

Just comparing the image captured by the sensor on the Sony NEX 5 camera. It will be the same for the Sony NEX FS100 but in 16:9 format.

Canon 1Ds MII with 50mm lens. I only talk about 35mm format FullFrame lenses. That was the original question. The image capture on the sensor will be the same as if you..
- put a the Canon EF 35mm on the Sony NEX 5 with the Metabones 'original' adapter (no extra glass).
- put a 50mm with Metabones Speed booster on the Sony NEX 5

This explains it all : http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...ooster&p=1986308820&viewfull=1#post1986308820

Wrong....well kinda. A 24 with speedbooster won't be quite as wide as a 16 but it will be between a
17-18mm lens. The speedbooster makes the FOV wider and the Fstop faster....that's what focal
reducers do. The caveat is that the lens must be a FF lens so that the speedbooster can make the
lens have the same FOV that 24mm has on a FF camera, which is around 17-18mm on a Super 35.

This is true......what is a 24-105 FOV in Super 35 terms is roughly equal to 38-168 in FF terms....
but this is with no speed booster. Once you put the speedbooster on you get the
Super 35 FOV of roughly 17-73mm which is equal to a FF view of 24-105mm. The Super 35
is more 'telephoto' so it needs a smaller number to 'see' as wide of a shot (17mm FOV on S35
being roughly comparable to 24mm FOV on FF). But it also needs a smaller number
to see as 'telephoto' of a shot (73mm on S35 being roughly comparable to 105mm on FF).
What the speedbooster is doing, is giving you roughly the same FOV that the lens would
give you on a FF camera in the first place, which is more wide, and less telephoto.
Make sense??

my dear friends...
i only want to know about the the sharpness and the image quality on fs 100 with speed booster...from youre experience ..
thanks.

Not this again!

Look, he is using a different frame of reference than you. He is saying if you put a 18mm lens on
a Super 35 cam, then take it off and put a 24mm with a speedbooster, they will look almost the same.
He is right. You are saying that if you put a 50mm on a Super 35 and a 85 on a full frame, they
will look almost the same. You are right as well.

The best comparison I can think of off the top of my head, is measuring temperature.
He says water freezes at 32 degrees. You say that is crazy, water freezes at 0 degrees.
Who is right? You both are! He is using a different scale (Fahrenheit) than you
are (Celcius). But both Fahrenheit and Celcius have a 0 degree measurement and a 32
degree measurement.....just not in the same place on each scale. He is taking your
Celcius measurements and converting them to Fahrenheit and you are taking his
Fahrenheit measurements and converting them to Celcius.

i've never shot vistavision or stills, so a 24-105 is a 24-105 on most any adptor, but put it on a speedbooster and multiply by 0.7 to get one to 17-75(ish)

to me a 24 is a 24 on a super35 sized gate, and i know excatly what i will see if i put a 24 on my camera be it a 435 or a Alexa or a FS100...

if i put it on a speedbooster i will see what i would expect to see from an 18

Never did get my head around the stills/vistavision wacky math thing... and really what ever a stills shooter see's is of somewhat less than zero concern of mine....

For anyone shooting S35 sized gate/sensor my math is correct

Thanks for the link, i actualy wadded through all that dreck....

but as i mentioned eariier i just don't give even the smallest care about what Ff equlivent numbers are.... i don't use FF camera's and i don't have a refrence point for FF, i really do think in S35.... and the speedbooster is only gonna work on a S35 sensor (or film gate) -or gates/sensors smaller than that

So that link falls into the "useless waste of time" pile - i really dont give a RRA about how the speedboster does or does not replacate FF values, i only care about that it does on my S35 sensor and that's x0.7....

here's a quote that really counts tho;
Mounted between a mirrorless camera and a SLR lens, Speed Booster® increases maximum aperture by 1 stop (hence its name), increases MTF and makes lens wider by a factor of 0.71x. Optics designed by Caldwell Photographic in the USA (patent pending).

So yea, i stand by my math.. x0.7 - the rest of the math / FF equlivents is either useless or incorrect

That very link show exactly what I am saying. Numbers on left are Super 35mm
with no speed booster and numbers on right are FF (which is roughly the same
as Super 35 with Speedbooster. It's not the exact same but very close.)

17mm = 24mm
24mm = 37mm
35mm = 53mm
50mm = 76mm
85mm = 129.5mm

These numbers are from your link!!! You said that even with the speedbooster you
could 'never get wider than a 24mm'. But you are talking about the 24mm on the right
side. Dermot is talking about the 24mm on the left side and the speedbooster does
get wider than 24mm on the left side!! Do you see the problem?

Further, from your own link a 24-105mm lens mounted on a Super 35 cam with a
speedbooster will give you the FF equivalent (remember these are the numbers
on right) of a 25.9 - 113.6mm lens (remember I said you wouldn't get exactly
24-105 but close.). If you take these numbers on the right and look at their 'left side'
equivilents' you will see.....18(ish)mm - 75(ish)mm......which is exactly what I and
Dermot said. You guys are saying the same thing but using different 'sides' on the
number scale! To make things confusing, if you take that 24mm from the 'right'
side and mount it on a Super35mm with no speedbooster, it will give you a
straight 24mm on the 'left' side......which is 'equivalent' to a 37mm on the
'right' side...but if you use the speedbooster it is 'roughly' 24mm on the
'right' side (25.9) which is about 18mm on the 'left' side.

To the OP. I apologize, just trying to straighten this out. I was AC on a big shoot
a few months ago. We had the 16-35, the 24-70, the 70-200 (all F2.8) as well
as a 50mm F1.2, 85mm F1.2, 35mm F1.4 and the 24-105 F4. When we used zooms,
the DP never used the 24-105. I asked him why. He said it was plenty sharp and
gave a 'good' image, but was just missing something he couldn't quite put his finger
on. So I didn't get to see the image from it.....LOL.

These are the correct numbers... from the same thread...but you picked the wrong ones as I believe...

I think it's more like this.

FS700
Speed Booster adapter:

24mm T1.5/36mm crop1.5 = full frame 24 T1.1
35mm T1.5/52.5mm crop1.5 = full frame 35 T1.1
50mm T1.5/75mm crop1.5 = full frame 50 T1.1
85mm T1.5/127.5mm crop1.5 = full frame 85 T1.1

FS700 crop 1.5
MB EF-->E adapter

24mm = 36mm
35mm = 52.5mm
50mm = 75mm
85mm = 127.5mm

Okay guys. Thanks for explaining the Speedbooster once again...
Everybody knows about the 0,71x crop already when he ever used it, right?
If you don't know, see the Metabones/Caldwell Optics white paper.

By the way: Happy new year!
