What do you like most in a website?

Just curious what is your homepage and what features you like most?

Edit: By homepage I mean, what is your default page when you load Explorer or Firefox. DVXuser, Google, ...And what features do you use the most; Google search, Yahoo Maps, etc.

Thanks.

As a webmaster I think the most important part is the easy of updating, and overall simplicity of the site. (for both admin and user)

Honestly, I dont think I have ever used the search function for general purposes on private websites. (If by 'search' you meant it as a search engine type of function) I use search on this site (duh) and other internal search functions on sites, but not to replace Googling.

I like ease of use. I dont like to have to dig thru a couple pages to find things. If a site seems intricate or with many 'layers', I will immediately look for a site map to break it down.

If there is sound involved, I like a clear option of viewing the page without it.

And, this may be just a tiny thing to mention, but I really like being able to mouse over links and get the next page info or menu options. I dont like having to click to see what is there.

Oh, and a "Contact Us' link clearly on the main page.

m'kay...if I think of more, I'll come back.

Actually, I just look for a page with lots of information laid out in a very simple and clear manner.

Not what you asked, but I'll tell you what I HATE in a website: some stupid long flash animation that makes you wait before you can get in and start doing what you went there to do. That flash stuff is flashy, but it's incredibly user-hostile! Ditch the flash and do like thartley says about google -- it loads fast, and it does what it's supposed to do quickly (helps you find stuff).

PK,
to answer your question about start-up home page:
- in FIREFOX I have google as home page.
- in IE it's just about:blank
- in OPERA I simply start it with how I left it when I exited the program. I love this feature, as I can simply continue where I left off, sometimes with 8 or 10 windows/tabs.

Cheers.

You don't say... :cheesy:

Google for me... well, more accurately, the FireFox start page. Because it's Google w/ a mozilla logo, and that's A-OK by me.

Just in case you didn't know...9 times out of 10, hitting the stop button will stop the sound. Well, if it's a BGSOUND for sure, and sometimes even when the sound is being played from elsewhere.

I find it annoying, too. I even took the sounds off my pages.

"What do I like best about a website?"

What, this has gone on for 11 posts and not one nod for large breasted women! We all need to get out more!!!

I've got 14 tabs that load as my startup pages for firefox...

But as far as what I look for in a good webpage? Simple interface, easy navigation.

I hate it when there is music in websites... as I am sure the rest of you do as well

I refuse to use myspace because everyone's site not only has music, but it's the most cluttered piece of garbage ever. lol

Overlapping textboxes everywhere, and crappy poetry.

Thanks! So the perfect website would be blank, BUT have useful information, google search, and large breasted women. :)

[delusion of grandeur]The reason I ask is because I'm designing a portal which, hopefully, will become more popular than yahoo and google[/delusion of grandeur]

Basically the difference between my site and the big guys is, just by visiting or making it your homepage you'll be helping people. No donations. No fees. No nothing. Just visit and search like you do any other site. BUT instead of making Google's stock go up and making billionaires even more money, your visits and clicks will help fund humanitarian projects. Basically, "Helping you, help the world." A win, win. :)

Haven't worked out all the details. Any ideas?

I like Yahoo as well but use the "My Yahoo" version since you can customize it to have only (nearly) the information that you want. It has the advantage of being constant regardless of what machine you access it from.
