Hey guys,

been using my old DVX with rode nt3 (indoors) and ntg2 (outdoors) with my gh13s.

Works well, but it's a pain.

Are most people using the zoom H4N, and would it be better than the DVX audio?

1) It's obviously a lot smaller and convenient.
2) USB connection for your SD card; whereas DVX is real-time capturing from tape -argh!
3) DVX records 16-bit, but I believe H4N is 24 bit, is that right?

I am using the Yamaha Pocketrak CXs which record 48K and 16 bit, which I find just fine for what we are doing.

Yes, you can record 24-bit 48kHz WAV files with a portable digital recorder, which will sound better than the camera audio you're currently recording. But as Andrew pointed out, some people have reported issues with the H4n and some Rode mics. I've also read here that the H4n drains its batteries pretty quickly when you're using phantom power.

The Tascam DR100 may be a better choice. A Sound Devices 702 would be even better, but they're not cheap.

You should get a recorder. You're current workflow sounds pretty rough.

Plus for the DR100 over the Zoom:
-Higher gain controls
-Dual power (AA and lithium ion rechargeable)

Thanks.

+ DR100 has a very good automic gain control (doesn´t crank the gain up when it´s silent), so you can use it to level automatically and plug it directly into the camera (which you set to manual)

Marantz 661 falls between the DR100 and the 702 price wise, and is my choice. It has been highly recommended by a lot of people.
