What do you do when you're Lacie decides to crap out on you...?

500G Lacie will not mount it....all of my current projects are on it and I was literally just about to buy a terabyte so I could back up all of my career's work so far.

I have heard that DiscWarrior will fix this issue...for people that have had similar issues.
I tried multiple power/usb/firewire cables...so i don't know what's going on. I also have heard that leaving it alone for a day or two may work...

Any thoughts? This has happened so many times to a friend of mine where a drive just refuses to connect anymore...why does this happen so often and why would Lacie continue to make drives that do this?

I don't know....just upset because all of my source files and deliverables are on that drive...

Always keep a backup. FW drives, unlike diamonds, are not forever. FW drive failure is not a matter of if, but when.

You can try DiskWarrior. It can help, unless the drive is totally FUBAR. If the drive is not even showing up on your desktop, DW may not be able to help. It has to be able to see the drive, even if the directory is messed up.

A last resort, and a costly option, is a data recovery lab that can at least get the data off the drive and transfer it to another.

That's always a bummer.
Is the drive making any funny sounds? Clicking, spinning up then down? If so, it could be an intermittent problem that will suddenly come back to life, or it could signal complete death. I've seen both. If you get it to work, try and copy the most important things first, a little at a time.

I've had the same problem with several Lacie drives in particular and tend to stay away from them, but as CV2 says, it's more a question of when a drive will fail, not if.

One thing to try might be to take out the drive and put it in another case or your computer. Good luck.

Worth noting: the D2 Quadra drives from LaCie are well-known for failing quickly. I've used other LaCie drives (Porsche design) for years, and the only one (so far) that has failed on me was in 2002... an early model (not a Porsche) that was not meant to be dragged around in a briefcase.

well while I deal with this....i'm in the business for a new external hard drive...anybody have any recommendations?

I'd definitely recommend you try this. I had a LaCie 500GB drive that failed and required Drivesavers to get my info back. That's the last resort as it's a very expensive way to learn to backup your material. I've had other drives fail to mount that were fixed with a new case.

the only thing you can try is pulling it out of the enclosure and connecting sata/pata via another controller and seeing if it will mount, if so copy it off or image it, most likely the disk inside had a mechanical failure.

I am doing this right now. So we'll see.....but what drive does everyone use? I have always used Lacie, but this issue has happened numerous times to people i know and now it has happened to me..

What external hard drive should i buy next?

I've used lots of Lacie drives of all types with few problems; including the quadras. All drives fail. Don't trust any brand. You gotta back 'em up.

This happened to me once. Never got it to work. I still put way too much faith in my external hard drives. I just can't afford to buy twice as many so that I can back everything up. This is why I'm glad that I still use miniDV for the most part - I at least still have the footage if something happens.

Best of luck getting yours fixed.

Apple stores mostly - at least that's where I buy them in Canada. I think you can also directly buy them from their website. Give your local Apple store a call and I think they can order in your specific model if they don't have it in stock.

Thanks man, i just ordered one of these. Hope all goes well.

I've had a couple of lacies crap out on me as well over the years. Right now I have a WD usb drive and haven't had any problems.

FWIW, invest in a separate backup drive to store your stuff on and stick it in the back of the closet. It's not a waste of money.
