I, a struggling artist, video maker, photographer, actor, is wondering what is is you all do, and how it is you got there.

I haven't been on the boards all that long, but I try and participate whenever I can. In this time I have never really gotten to know anyone. So again I ask, what's your profession and what steps did you take to get to the point your at now.

Example, I know Barry Green is an editor and or regular contributor to HD video pro magazine, as well as a mac daddy of all things new at Panasonic. What else do you do Barry?

Jan from Panasonic?

Kholi owning 2 complete RED packages, what is your main source of income, and how did you get there.

Anyone from the boards?

Thanks,
Adam McKay

Hmm

Hmm

At the moment, I am a fourth year Poli Sci Major at UCI. I've been writing my whole life, and have just recently moved into moving pictures. I started a production company with my friends and hopefully will be able to utilize our assets in order to make a living. I plan to go to film school, but still don't know where. :o

I am actually an advanced simulation chat bot, I harness the surpless CPU power on idle PCs and Macs, only way you can kill me off is to destroy the internet....

I'm Director of Media Production at my local church making a little bit of dough for fulltime work. Started my own company Praise Pictures last year and I'm working on my first feature film Standing Firm (ala my signature), and plan to sell it to a distributor.

I got out of school after the first year in (college) because I realized I didn't need it to make money immediately. From there it was off to the races :P If the film company didn't exist I made good money besides my fulltime job doing graphics, web, vfx, etc. for hire on a case my case basis. You'd be surprised how much you can make at 20 something with some good clients for web development, lots of money in that if you know what your doing.

How'd I get here? I basically wasted my childhood in front of the computer and haven't quit since. When everyone else was doing school sports in 8th or 9th grade, I was doing work a freshmen in college was doing. Turned out to be useful once you graduate :)

I've been doing video production since HS, which had quite a program for a public school. That was in the 80's. I went on to get my BS and MS degrees in film/video production. Started working for a small film production company in PA. Shot 16mm, also did offline editing, then Avid came out. Learned that forward and backward.

Moved to Baltimore where I worked as a shooter/editor for 2 of the bigger production houses in town. Got more in 2d/3d animation. Left to go out on my own in 1998. Worked for the Baltimore Ravens making animated graphics for their 100' wide endzone screens. Along the way shot and edited video for various political campaigns, fortune 500 companies, and pharmaceutical firms. Had a brief stint running the post production side of a huge consulting firm on the DC area, then decided I couldn't work for anyone else but myself. So here I am.

I went to film school, got a Bachelor's degree in film, and found that to be less useful than toilet paper. I then took a few weekend classes at Video Symphony in Burbank and got Avid Certified, and that got me work as an Assistant editor, and from there, an editor, which is how I make my living.

I am a student and freelance AD (or additional crew)

I started off in 2003 I think when I opened my first media company when I was 14. Purchased a Sony Handicam with money from a parental loan. I started filming paintball events as that was something I really enjoyed playing. From then on I began to start making some decent money. A few thousand. Closed the company in 2005.

At that point I put down the camera - I was sick of the paintball industry and began playing professionally. I was also a head field ref at 16. Played several events until I broke my wrist. Then I picked up a film camera and decided to start shooting events. I soon became a staff photographer for PB2Xtreams Magazine. I quit in 2006 - when the paychecks stopped coming.

I took a break from the media industry for a while and eventually bought an HV20 when it first came out and started shooting plays and other stuff. Did a mini-documentary that made it to New York and LA and was critically acclaimed and sponsored. I then applied to Ithaca college in 2007. Where I was accepted.

Soon thereafter I began shooting films. I also networked quite a bit and that's when I was able to start freelancing. PA'd for an A&E shoot. Casted for Beauty and the Geek, Script Supervised and AD seconded a SAG Ultralow. Scheduled a great deal of student films and AD'd several. I shot and wrote a few projects too. Nothing worth talking about.

Right now Perchance to Dream is my main project with a feature in the pipeline. I am launching my production company 4th quarter. The thing I am most excited about is the Production Services end of it. Where we break down scripts, consult on films, schedule films from student to indies. More to come on that as soon as I get greenlighted by DVXuser for advertising.

Well, I guess I'll confess up..

I'm a postgrad (well just finnishing up Adv Comp Sci),

Read an article in a newspaper years ago (just prior to DVX100), and the article was talking how technology had changed so much and how "digital camcorders" (Canon XL1) was so good that they was better than film! (what a load of rubbish, at the time I didn't know any better).

Through my research I soon found out just, how hard "filmlook" was, I was a man obsessed, eventually DVX100 came around, looking for clips originally, I entered this forum (and others), long story short I got hooked here.

I then eventually picked up 3d and VFX while spending time at DVXuser University.

And currently I'm cooking some stuff up for the indie market, hush hush, that is too much information..

.

My first digital video camera was a sony TRV900. At the time people were saying it was equal in quality to 16mm film. LOL! Nice try!

I started shooting indie films when I was a teenager, just for fun. Learned everything I could about celluloid filmmaking and video. Shot a few rolls of super8, lots of video and stop motion. Thought about going to film school at age 19 and then decided it would cost too much and instead took a 13 week film course where I shot my first 16mm short.

Internet started becoming big and I taught myself web and graphic design. Kept making indie films. Shot my first indie feature in 2003 at age 24. Continued making a few short films and doing web work. Got a job at a local web media company in 2006 doing video and web design. Been there two years now and only work on video now (shooting, editing, motion graphics). Fly out tomorrow for Hawaii to do a video shoot for a client. Planning to get back into doing my own indie film work soon. Where the future leads I don't really know. Just keeping at it.

I worked in the hotel industry for about 10 years, didn't take a vacation for about 7 years and so now I can goof off and do nothing for about 2-1/2 years. Oh yeah, pays not to go on vacation. I have no idea what I want to do now, other than to work in this industry.

My hopes are to one day sing with Beyonce, lol, it could happen!
