what do i set my db to

First off, use a good set of earphones to monitor your sound. Then listen to your audio and set the db to what sounds right to you for any given situation. Without earphones, you can't tell what your audio is doing.

You probably want your audio peaking out at 2 to 3 red dots on the LCD. Of course, you want to monitor the sound too. I normally record with the mic plugged into channel 2 and record sound onto both channels, one set a bit lower than the other in case I max out, I can use the other channel.
