what do i need a mattebox for)

Forgetting he was a house-guest of Jarred's, he acted like a poo pooing schmucko.

I checked back a bit, and I don't think this cat ever posted in a thread that wasn't started by himself.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Thanks Jarred. I looked. You know what it's for. I guess I could do with some additional details for a neophyte. I've seen "cardboard" matteboxes for sale on ebay for the DVX. I've seen really expensive ones. And isn't that plastic guard that comes standard on the DVX a form of mattebox?

I gather a more sophisticated mattebox also allows for additional filters...but I wonder if that's the extent of it. Maybe a more sophisticated mattebox is used in extreme conditions like shooting in the snow or the desert? I have been curious about these things.

And for the record, as a new DVXuser.com addict, I'd love to see it remain the amazing resource it is, and not a schoolyard for bullies pickin' on over-sensitive nerds like me.

One question that was never answered, and mebbe it's cuz no one knows, but why are FF units SO expensive? RedRockMicro are supposed to be coming out with one for $500 in Jan I think, but even that is a lil pricey...

Mostly to pay for research and development. The market is small so the profit margin needs to be higher... - If they sold them at Wal-Mart by the millions, you could likely get them for under $50.

so we've established that they're great to have. jarred...anyone...what would you recommend thats not extremely pricey? thx

I'd like to know this as well.

Its a hard one.. Cavision makes one good mattebox for pretty cheap, in the $399 price point, but its only one model, the rest of them are junk. I like some of Cavisions stuff, but i think they might just send me the good stuff cause I hear alot of return for defective stuff stories. The image 2000 one is made better, and $499, but its pretty basic.. but very solid. There is a bogen/formatt mattebox that is total junk, around $500 as well... but it will work with the HVX.

Lesson is I think with most things, is that it pays to pay. Yeah they are all a total ripp off.. but as dakota mentioned if you make a product that only sells 2000 units and it costs $50,000 in mold fees and R&D, you gotta make that money back somewhere.

This thread makes me really want a matte box. I would probably mostly use it for grads and pols, but still...mmmmmm

Speaking of FF, what ever happened to that guy that DYIed a FF, joel? I lost track of it during our Katrina Odyssey.

I remember Terry Lasater picked up a Cavision mattebox a couple years ago and told me he didn't like it. I think he was sending it back. Right Terry? I use the Chrosziel 4x4, and it's rock solid.

yeah the chroz is pretty industry standard.. but its not cheap.

If I had any choice in the world, it would be an arri 6 stage swingout, but your looking at $6k

haha yeah I remember that pic you posted a few years back of your dvx on that bad boy. Still have that around?

I love this thread
it should be titled "SWIFT JUSTICE"
Do you think he will now email walter graff and ask
"what is lighting for ? and why do I need it ?"
"
But seriously Gents
I have ......
Ta Da ......
A Mattbox quetion .!!!!!!!
Can you believe it?
Well I have all these arri mitchell and Tiffen 3x3 square glass filters and
I wish to rig something withe the original DVX100a mattbox or sun shade so as to use that factory item with
these small filters (which I own from my arri and mitchell kits .)
I guess i could rig my old mitchell standard matt box on rails and use a plate unter the camera with rails ..but 3x3 may not cut it in wide angle !!

these 3x3 filters may work while zoomed into to medium an long focal lenght shot s .
I am sure ill find out as I test ..

But (here is the question )
Has anyone tried using 3x3 square filters on the DVX100 a and can they work?
I have a feeling the answer is a Big No for wide angle.
But at medium and longer focal lenths
I thought I might have something on hand to save me from a big investment in 4x4 filters
Thanks for a reply
Cheers

3x3 filters are a bad idea, but they work. . you can get adapters to fit 3x3's in 4x4 frames.

They do work, not at full wide, but if you use something that puts the filters really close to the lens like the cinetactics matteblox (which is the cheapest mattebox out there, and pretty cool) you can use your 3x3's at full wide.

Thanks Jarred
That is much better news than I expected
I guess ill be a buyer for that matt box ..it sound usefull.
Mattblox.
Also as I understand
There is a common issue with all DV footage the closer you are withte filter the more you need to make sure there are no micro scratches on the glass .
I have seen small water stains showing up on test footage after a rain shot and boy !!
No film camera and lens sees what these Dv cameras capture in therms of scratches and liquid spots .!!!
Lotta Labor hours in lens and filter cleaning in the dv future !!!
Thanks agin Jarred !!
Mattblox it is .
Cheers
