What do i look for in a used camera?

Hey guys, new here.

There is a bloke on ebay with no feedback selling a FX1 at a very reasonable price (private sale). Naturally, I dont trust him at all, so I've organised to meet him in person and inspect the camera before purchase.

So my question is, what do i look for?

What are signs of wear and age on a camera? Do the heads have an odometer somewhere that I'm not aware of?

What do i look for beyond superficial signs of wear and tear?
 
More than just the look of the Camera, use common sense and instinct. Do you have an old video on mini dv? take it and see if it will play, fresh tapes usually play even on dirty heads, but sometimes older videos wont. look at the condition, scratches, missing screws, wear on the botom from the contact with the tripod. And lastly once again, use common sense and instinct, if something feels off, if he rubs you the wrong way, if he is a jerk or if hes too nice; dont do the deal. You'll feel better about it when you buy the camera you want on your terms.
Oh yea! check the lens with light reflecting off of it for scratches, IMPORTANTE!!!!!
 
Ask to see the original receipt, to make sure it was not stolen. Furthermore you will need it for the reminder of the warranty.
