what do directors wear?

Dress comfortable. I'm also the stunt coordinator on my films, so I dress in parkour gear. It's comfy, and I can set down the camera and physically work out the blocking with the actors. If it's a day I have to double for an actor or actress, I'll dress as them for the day. And if I don't have to do anything stunt related, I usually wear cargos, running shoes, tshirt or hoodie and a boonie hat.
 
Cargos are a great thing. I also think this will totally depend upon if it's your project or you are for hire. I can tell you that working all day in pants in Florida really stinks. Try wearing a suit down here and running steadicam in the summer. I think a lot can be posturing. Like I heard about a guy who showed up in a full lenght leather black coat to shoot onboard a boat all day. Shooting a fishing show in all black. Sure he looked "cool" but also what a complete moron.

Double HA! I actually DO wear a fedora for just that reason -- protecting my bald white skull from roasting in the Florida sunshine! During the winter, I wear a black one and during the winter, a breathable mesh one. So funny that you would mention it.
 
I can't believe we are having this discussion but then again why not. Justyn raises a valid point, When I was shooting in Barbados I was garbed much differently than when I was in the Arctic last year or the Amazon. But at this point in my career I wear what is comfortable and suitable for the temp and environment. With all the electronics from smart phones to tablets and comm gear I often wear a photographers vest or carry a courrier bag, since most of my productions don't include a bevy of assistants. Early in my career it came down to what was clean and what I had not worn the day before on set. But I have to say the the twig and berry situation can indeed be solved in a Celtic way with a kilt. Thus eliminating pants and affording the testicular freedom some men require to do their best work.
