what do directors wear?

there's this success principle that you should "dress for the job you want"

this got me thinking- what's the cliche director's outfit?

no, im not talking abut the old jockey pants and megaphone.

I always think directors are "dressed down", like Ive seen pictures of Bryan Singer in sweats and sports gear

and of course Sam Raimi and I think at least one other director does the thing where they dress up, like a suit basically.

Lloyd Kaufman from Troma jokes that you should either dress better than everyone else, so you look like the boss, or worse than everyone else so you look like you dont give a crap and youre an artist just here to make art.

there may not be a cliche, archetypical, directors outfit.

I usually see most directors wear jeans, I think its more of what ever you think is comfortable type thing.

You can either dress like a douchebag or a slob. Your pick. :)

Whenever I DP things I always go more the douchebag route, suits are always fun when not worn seriously.

Interesting watching an interview with Spielberg...on Lincoln...he dressed in the attire of the era.

Whatever you do, it's IMPERATIVE you wear a baseball cap, otherwise you're not really a director.

Exactly. And if you really want to splash out get yourself a black T with DIRECTOR on it. That way you can wear it even when you're not shooting and people will know.

Here's me on the set of my latest film "Billy the Kid vs. Dracula 2" which, by the way, I'm currently seeking additional financing to complete.

Please feel free to contact me if interested.

Baseball cap? HA!!! Wearing a fashionable fedora shows everyone that you are an Artiste. (And does a better job preventing sunburn.)
Wearing a suit might be good for impressing a corporate client. Of course, if you're a one-man crew, wearing a suit could be problematic. :)

Eh, wear whatever you feel comfortable with. Obviously I wouldn't suggest torn jeans and a white t-shirt, but if you have enough swagger, that can be pulled off too. Most directors i've seen it's a nice pair of jeans, a button down or t-shirt, and sports or leather jacket. And a hat of course.

Or if you want to make everyone else look bad, you could always go the Christopher Nolan route and always look like you just left a Brookes Brothers.

haha yup+10
I wear whatever I put on when I got out of the shower, I don't really care to be honest, as long as you do a good job, you can wear whatever your comfortable in.
