What company offers the best shared web hosting?

All about the Caption
A few years ago, this topic was kicked around here and most recommended Globat. Eventually, they fell out of favor and the consensus changed to PowWeb. Later, BlueHost was crowned as the fave.

Considering performance, price, and service, who currently reigns in your estimation?

Thanks!

you can go to webhostingtalk.com
to find some offers if you will.

on the cheaper front hostgator is one of the big names.

you can actually find $10 unmanaged linux vps hosting if you dig a bit and like unmaged vps.

http://novahost.org/

They just reopened registrations. Free and 99% uptime.

Thanks, Andrew. Just to make clear, I'm looking for hosting for small business websites - don't want banner ads, pop-ups, etc. Not sure if NovaHost offers that after a quick peek at their site. Maybe they do...

Anyhow, I'm a bit suspicious of 100% free. I mean, if an issue happens on their end, I can't really complain since it hosting is free. :)

I checked out http://www.findmyhosting.com for info but the reviews seem a bit fishy to me. I'm calling shenanigans.

As you can see from my sites (most still in development), there are no ads, and I'm hosted with them.

Nathan, the owner, is very dedicated to providing the best support he can. Not only are free-hosted websites on the server, so are his. He basically makes money on banner ads he places on his other websites. I.e; the NovaTech Support Forums, among his other websites.

Thanks again, Andrew. I'll take a closer look.

Thanks for all the input so far, everyone! :)

Looks like I'll be busy for a while studying the options.

I'm just scratching the surface on learning to create web pages with HTML using tables. A good friend who does floor installation for a living is trading work to my house for a simple website with photos and videos that I'll produce.

Yup, just learning. :) I've taken an intro course on HTML and currently taking it's successor.

I will be taking a course on CSS and XHTML beginning in October. Baby steps for now.

Cool. I Don't feel so bad asking this question then.

Andrew, does novahost allow uploading precompiled flash web sites?
Because that's all I know how to do as far as web programming goes.

Web develpment isn't really something I'm looking at but if it's free I'm thinking
maybe I could take some trial runs at it or something. Sounds cool.

Do you think Flash is doable with novahost? I mean as uploading a precompiled flash web site to them. (I know I could research it. For input though I'm just asking.) This stuff is all new to me.

Thanks.

I'm not sure about Flash. But I don't think it would be much of an issue.

You'll probably get an answer within a day.

If you want some decent shared hosting at $25 per month, go to Hostgator.com and choose the copper reseller plan

If you like some top notch service and dedicated resources, go to http:// servint.net - Be ready for a steeper learning curve, but once you get used to this level of control you won't want to deal with shared or free hosting.

And feel free to tell either of these companies that Kenneth Fisher sent you!

I've been very happy with 1and1 .. I've been using them to host both my personal and our work websites for a number of years now. Very little (if any? [knock on wood]) downtime, and great server speeds, capacity & features for very little dough.

Namecheap for domain names, first year for free "whois" - keeps people from knowing it's your website.

Hostgator middle plan because you get unlimited domain names on there you can set up.

Find codes online for both to get discount.

Terry - I'm super huge rusty on codes. I did a simple html table for my production site (don't have anymore). CSS is the next step. Remember, you can borrow codes, backgrounds, etc. It's common practice when setting up websites.

Look forward to seeing some of your stuff.
