What cheap external recorder for FS700?

Hello,
I want to buy quite cheap external recorder for FS700. I will probably save money for a proper and buy one in the future (like Odyssey 7Q) but in the meantime I need something that will record issue free 4:2:2 signal (that's the only condition). Ninja Blade is nice but it's to expensive for my current budget.
Options:
- BMD HyperDeck Shuttle 2
- Atomos Ninja Star
- second hand Ninja or Ninja 2 (if I will find it in good price).

Something else? Maybe I am missing some other options.
I personally would probably go for BMD HDS2 but I've seen that footage from FS700 recorder have some serious issues (aliasing). Or is it resolved? Next one is Ninja Star, as it's size is amazing (I know media is more expensive, but I don't need a lot of space for now).

Little off topic:
Are there any news about Atomos Shogun if it's going to support FS700 raw input?

EDIT:
I've bought Ninja Star, I will write review in few weeks time.

I would doubt if you do yourself a favor with one of the listed items. For the BMD HyperDeck Shuttle 2 you need an extra power solution as the internal battery runs only about 1 hr. Atomos Ninja Star is hdmi only and limited to 128GB CFast Cards (not too cheap either) I would always prefer a SDI recorder over an HDMI - Samurai over Ninja. I would get a used samurai and resell it when you make the next step. If you are shooting only for personal project you could stay with internal AVCHD. I did not see any difference from converted .mts compared to the external ProRes. It's 8bit both. If you are shooting for money and you are not able to find the budget for a recorder there might be a mistake in your calculation.

Thanks a lot for input and I agree what you're saying. At this moment in time external recorder for me will be just to get broadcast approved footage. I will buying something decent in 2 months time but I need to buy any immediately. As much as I would like to buy something better my budget does not allow me to do it this month.

Why not just transcode it in resolve or something if you want to make the format broadcast approved? Since you're only getting 8 bit anyhow?

Was thinking about ninja star and fs700, where it's more important the 7q is a remote monitor than the aliasing/moire removed 4k2hd. Pretty hard to give up tho even though I was happy with avchd a year ago :)

so with the fs700 the star will give u 4:2:0 8 bit in 10 bit wrapper but higher bitrate and prores up to 1080i60 or 1080p30.

id buy one in a heartbeat if it did 1080p50/60 :( still waiting for something compact to do that. still might get one since it's cheap and the 7q is not able to do 50/60p from hid from other cams anyway.

ninja star and fs700 are a good combo, just used it
Nice to hear that :) Are you using Atomos cable or something else?

Yes, 8-bit but 4:2:2, and that is not the same (no matter if you will transcode ir or not)

4:2:2

When I first got the 700, I was using the NaniFlash with it, very nice at 422 100mb/s. A pretty big improvement over the internal rec.

The O7Q 4K>HD blows this out of the water though.

NanoFlash is still a viable product very light and rock solid, records on inexpensive CFcards. I have never had a problem in it must be 6 years or so now using the NF. One great thing with the NF is it uses very little power, so batteries last a very long time. I originally and still use it on my EX3 a lot.

I think you can rent or buy used NFs pretty reasonable these days.

I've been wanting to ask someone who has used the ninja star with the FS700. Can you tell me if it will allow you to record in the S&Q mode in 24p? Like if I wanted to shoot 60fps, or 2fps, etc in 24p? I'm going to make the assumption that super slow motion is out of the question.

I have ninja star, just not cards yet (so cannot try it for now). Super slow motion will work, because it's buffered and then recorded in 25/24p stream.
Not sure about the rest - will let you know when I will receive cfast card.

I eagerly away your tests. If it does work it seems like a great addition to the FS700.

I don't see how you could consider anything but the Odyssey7Q at this point. Sure, it might be more expensive but it only hurts once. I've lived the "buy cheap, buy twice" idiom far too many times. Even if you get a cheap 422 recorder, the camera doesn't put out 422 through the SDI. The 7Q made the FS700 into a whole new camera, in my opinion. So you can a cheaper recorder to record marginally better quality from the FS700 or you can get the Odyssey7Q and completely transform it.

Ninja Star is 1/10 of Odyssey 7Q price, no comparison here. When I will save money I might go 7Q (or Shogun? who knows, it might be compatible), for now it's a cheap way to get prores, 4:2:2, broadcast approved footage.

Fair enough. CFast cards seem extremely expensive, though. Even Transcend's cheapest ones cost more than CD's SSDs. Higher-end brands are like $1000-1200 for 256GB.

It only needs cfast 1.0, which is $239 for 128gb -it's not that bad.

ninja star doesn't work for super slomo. you need 50/60p capable recorder to get 100/200(120/240)fps buffered slomo because that stream is 50/60p, not 24/25p.

Shogun will work for 1080P50/60fps recording so you can play with buffered 1080P slomo.

I believe that there are currently only three recorders on the market that will accept and record the 1080p50 or 1080p60 signal required for the playback of the slow motion buffer. Those would be the Odyssey7, the Odyssey7Q and the Ki Pro Quad.
